📰Applying for permanent residency in Canada will increase on April 30, 2024, for some applicants.

The fee adjustments range from $10 - $200 depending on the pathway being used to apply for permanent residence.

Also, in addition to dependent children and protected persons, the following applicants are exempt from paying the Right of Permanent Residence fee:

✅Sponsored child under 22 years of age of a principal applicant under the family reunification class
✅Principal applicants under the humanitarian and compassionate consideration and public policy classes.

📰🚨 The changes related to changes to eligibility for Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP) were announced by IRCC.

Effective March 19, 2024, spouses and common-law partners of international students are eligible for a SOWP only if their sponsor is enrolled in a Masters degree, PhD or professional program at a university or polytechnic institution in Canada.

🚨Major Update: Canada's Immigration Minister has announced new measures to limit and curb the abuse of Canada's international student program.

1️⃣Canada will implement a two-year cap on international study permits, it will reduce the number of study permits by 35% from 2023's level to 364,000.

2️⃣ Each province will be assigned a fixed number of study permits that's proportional to its population, and have to decide how it divvies them up among the schools authorized to take in international students.

3️⃣There are no more postgraduate work permits for students who graduate from Private Career Colleges operating under Public College-Private Partnerships.

4️⃣For your spouse to apply for a dependent open work permit, you need to be a Master’s degree or in a professional program such as medicine or law

🚨IMPORTANT UPDATES for international students in Canada

1️⃣As of January 1, 2024, new study permit applicants will need to show they have CAD$20,635 to support their living expenses; an increase from CAD$10,000.

2️⃣International students can continue to work more than 20 hours off campus until April 30, 2024.

3️⃣The policy to count time spent studying online, once less than 50% of the program, has been extended to September 1, 2024

4️⃣Unfortunately, the temporary policy to extend post-graduate work permits (PGWP) will not be extended into 2024.

In 2014, I arrived in Canada as an international student. Fast forward to 2017, when I submitted my Express Entry profile.

My Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score was 489 - not too shabby, right? You won't believe what happened next! Within just 5 days, an invitation to apply for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) stream landed in my inbox. Talk about a speedy invite!

Now, here's the twist: I initially thought I had to wait until I had a full year of Canadian work experience to apply under the Canadian Experience Class. But guess what? I had it all wrong! 🤯 If I subtracted the 15 points I earned from studying in Canada, my overall score would have been 474. That would've made me eligible for several FSW draws held between 2014 and 2017. 📜

Looking back, it's clear that a chat with an immigration consultant could have saved me those three years of waiting (and money). My experience from Jamaica was more than enough, and I wouldn’t have needed to delay my dream of becoming a Canadian permanent resident.

So, here's the lesson: A lack of or misinformation can cost you valuable time and potentially even money. Allow me to help you navigate the immigration maze and bring your Canadian dreams to life. 🌟
