π’ Major Update on Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP) in Canada! π¨π¦βοΈ
π₯ Are you or your partner planning to study in Canada? Big changes have just been announced that could affect your eligibility for a Spousal Open Work Permit!
Whatβs New:
As of March 19, 2024, only the spouses or partners of students enrolled in masterβs or doctoral programs at Canadian universities or polytechnics are eligible for SOWPs. This shift aims to streamline the process and ensure the integrity of the program.
Exceptions to Note:
Spouses of students in certain professional undergraduate degree programs still qualify for SOWPs. These include degrees like Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Engineering, and more.
Essential Documents for SOWP Applicants:
A valid Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Proof of enrolment letter from the studentβs DLI.
Transcripts from the studentβs current program.
Already Applied?
If you applied for a SOWP before March 19 and your partner:
Holds a valid study permit.
Is eligible for a post-graduation work permit.
Is studying full-time at a qualifying institution.
Your application will still be processed under the previous rules.
What if Youβre Not Eligible Anymore?
If you no longer meet the SOWP eligibility criteria, other types of work permits or a visitor visa might still be an option.
Why This Matters:
These changes are part of IRCCβs ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of its programs and manage application volumes effectively, ensuring that opportunities are aligned with genuine study and family reunification goals.
