Removing the curb is the easy part.

The curb was doing two jobs: holding the water in and giving the waterproofing somewhere to stop. Take it out and the floor has to do both.

3 things change:
1. Floor height. 1/4" per foot still applies. A 4 ft run needs 1" of drop, and it can't come from above the bathroom floor.
2. Waterproofing. TCNA wants it at least 1 ft past the high point. Schluter says the whole floor.
3. Layout. Glass, spray direction and drain location decide how much water leaves the shower.

Get it wrong and nothing happens for a year. Then the subfloor tells you.

Kerdi not bonding — why tile comes loose over a membrane that looked perfectly installed.

You Kerdi’d the shower right. Full coverage, right trowel, worked the sheet flat with your hands until it felt solid. Three months later the tile’s letting go.

Flat and bonded aren’t the same thing. Your hands can’t feel a void.

When you push that sheet into the mortar, the air underneath has to go somewhere, and the only route it’s got is along the grooves you combed. Comb that wall in two different directions and the air reaches the point where they meet and stops. That’s a void — flat, smooth, and nothing bonded under it.

Comb the whole wall one way. Then embed it properly, from the middle out, across the grooves.

That's the whole difference, and it matters most where you'd expect: shower floors, benches, niches, kitchen floors. Anywhere that stays wet or gets scrubbed.

Mitered tile corners — why your 45s don't close, and what to cut instead.

You cut both sides at exactly forty-five, set them, and the joint's tight at the bottom and wide open at the top. So you recut it, set it again, and it's still open.

Your cuts were fine. That wall isn't ninety.

Two forty-fives give you ninety degrees of tile. If the wall underneath is ninety-two, you've got ninety degrees of tile trying to cover ninety-two degrees of corner, and those two degrees end up right at the face — the most visible part of the whole joint.

So stop cutting forty-five by default. Read the corner, split the angle. And if the angle changes as you go up the wall, that corner isn't a miter at all.

Basement build — one contractor, four levels, six cases a level. Some cases hold the right product, some hold something you'd regret, and whatever he opens goes in.

Moisture control. Subfloor. Flooring. Baseboard.

He had porcelain tile in his hand on level three and switched it for peel and stick. Had to live with it for the rest of the build.

That shower didn't fail at your seams.

Every failed Kerdi shower that comes through the store fails in the same spot, and it's not one you can check by eye.

Cutting the membrane around the drain and bonding it to the drain are two different jobs. That ring is a bonding fl**ge. The Kerdi has to actually be stuck to it.

But membrane laid on top looks identical to membrane bonded to it. Same flat surface, same finish. So you tile over it, flood it, and you find out months later.

Before you tile — go back to that fl**ge and make sure it's actually sealed.

Save this before your next flood test.
