The Strategic Advantage of Gratitude: A Canadian Thanksgiving Reflection 🦃
👉 As we head into Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, I'm reflecting on gratitude, not as a polite gesture, but as a leadership operating system.
In business, we're conditioned to focus on the gap: the missed targets, the unsolved problems. That deficit mindset is useful for strategy but corrosive to culture. Gratitude flips the lens from what's missing to what's present, the people, opportunities, and resilience that carried us here.
Furthermore leaders who operate from gratitude build loyalty, reduce burnout, and foster the psychological safety that fuels innovation.
🤔 Did you know? The first recorded Thanksgiving in Canada happened in 1578—43 years before Plymouth Rock. Explorer Martin Frobisher held a ceremony in what is now Nunavut to give thanks for surviving the Arctic journey. It wasn't until 1957 that Parliament fixed the holiday as the second Monday of October, a celebration of the completed harvest before winter sets in.
Three ways to bring this into your work:
1. Acknowledge the harvest. What did you build this year? Pause and recognize it.
2. Thank the farmhands. Send a specific note of thanks to someone who helped you navigate the ice.
3. Rest. Gratitude is hard to sustain when you're exhausted.
Gratitude isn't just for the dinner table. It's a powerful lens for our work and our world.
Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian network. I'm grateful for you and this community.🙏
