It starts as background noise. Over time, it’s something workers stop noticing - until hearing is affected.

During Speech & Hearing Month, it’s a good moment to pause and think about how noise shows up in everyday work, and the long‑term impact it can have on communication, safety, and well‑being.
That’s especially important right now. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) is conducting a province‑wide noise inspection campaign, with inspectors visiting workplaces to look at noise hazards and how exposure is being controlled.

Protecting hearing isn’t just about equipment. It’s about recognizing risks early and taking practical steps to reduce exposure where possible.

Small changes today can make a big difference over time.

What does a healthy workplace culture and good performance look like?

Employers and employees often have different ideas of what “good” looks like.

When these perspectives are unclear, inconsistent, or misaligned, performance can stall, frustration grows; and over time can lead to disengagement, conflict, grievances, and serious psychological health and safety risks.

In this week’s Blog, Dr. Bill Howatt explores how clarity is the bridge between culture, performance, and psychological safety — and why leaders can’t leave it to chance.

When expectations are unclear, culture and performance suffer. Defining expected behaviours boosts engagement, performance, and psych health and safety.
