Ontario Construction Safety Updates: What You Need to Know for 2026
Starting January 1, 2026, Ontario has implemented several important updates to construction safety regulations. These changes affect how construction sites are managed, inspected, and enforced.
For contractors, project managers, and safety professionals, understanding these updates is essential—not only to remain compliant, but to better protect workers and reduce risk on site.
Below are some of the key safety-related changes to be aware of:
🔹 AED Requirements on Larger Construction Sites
Construction projects that regularly employ 20 or more workers and are expected to run for three months or longer are now required to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) available on site.
In addition, employers must ensure the AED is properly maintained and that trained personnel are present to respond in emergency situations.
🔹 Enhanced Washroom Facility Recordkeeping
Employers are now required to maintain clear records of washroom cleaning and maintenance. These records must be accessible to workers, either through visible postings or digital documentation.
The goal is to improve hygiene standards and ensure transparency on site.
🔹 Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) for Non-Compliance
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), inspectors now have expanded authority to issue Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) during workplace inspections.
This change increases accountability and highlights the importance of proactive safety management, proper documentation, and compliance readiness.
🔹 Updates to PPE and Equipment(Crane) Documentation Requirements
Additional requirements are expected around PPE standards and equipment documentation, including records related to crane operations and duty logs.
These updates reinforce the need for accurate recordkeeping and regular safety reviews as part of a strong safety program.
