What if accessibility were built into the system from the start?
Universal Design brings assistive technology to scale by considering different communication needs as part of the infrastructure itself, rather than addressing them individually after the fact.

For schools, this means looking beyond whether an announcement can reach every classroom or building and considering whether every student and staff member has a way to receive it.

By integrating public address, classroom audio, visual messaging, and personal notifications, schools can create more accessible communication environments that support everyday participation, emergency preparedness, and a stronger sense of belonging.

At Telecor, we believe Accessible Communication should be part of the original conversation, not an afterthought. 👉https://telecor.com/articles/safety-for-everyone-why-accessible-communications-must-be-the-new-standard/

In a 2018 Lindenwood University study examining school emergency preparedness, researcher Jennifer Renae Wheeler Lofton documented an SRO's experience using separate radios to communicate with law enforcement and school administrators.

Both connections served an important purpose. But having access to each didn't necessarily mean information could move between them.

For an officer whose responsibilities extend across the school community, that distinction raises an important question: How do we ensure critical school communications reach the people responsible for acting on them?

Telecor's eWear Personal Notification Device offers an additional communication pathway, extending school-originated messages to an SRO while their law-enforcement radio continues serving its purpose.

Two radios tell part of the story. The communication between them tells the rest. 👉Explore the research and what it reveals about keeping SROs connected: https://telecor.com/articles/school-resource-officers-the-people-preparation-and-communication-behind-safer-schools/

School safety is a community effort, and School Resource Officers (SROs) play an important role in the people and relationships that make it possible.

Their responsibilities extend well beyond emergency response. Throughout the school day, SROs work alongside administrators, educators, counselors, students and families to support preparedness, resolve concerns and help maintain a safe learning environment.

Much of that work happens on the move. Whether responding to a request for student support or coordinating with school personnel, staying connected to the school's communication network matters.

Telecor's eWear Personal Notification Device provides an additional way for important information to reach SROs wherever their responsibilities take them on campus.

Explore the people, preparation and communication behind safer schools and why keeping SROs connected matters. 👉https://telecor.com/articles/school-resource-officers-the-people-preparation-and-communication-behind-safer-schools/

What happens when people move beyond the reach of an announcement?

Public address provides the foundation for facility-wide communication, while Telecor’s eWear Personal Notification Device adds a personal layer through text, visual cues, and vibration, helping critical information move with the people it is intended to reach.

Accessible Communication recognizes that reaching everyone may require more than one way to deliver the same message

Modernizing school communication shouldn't mean starting over.

At Dysart Schools, aging and fragmented systems created a need for change, but replacing everything at once wasn’t practical. The district took a phased approach, modernizing its core communication infrastructure while preserving technology that still worked.

Today, 11 schools have been upgraded, with more to follow. 👏

It’s a practical look at how districts can move beyond legacy limitations without letting them dictate the path forward.

New federal funding is available for schools looking to strengthen violence prevention and preparedness. The OJP Bureau of Justice Assistance has opened the FY2026 Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Program, supporting initiatives that help schools recognize risks, respond quickly, and prevent acts of violence. Eligible efforts include violence-prevention training, threat assessment and intervention teams, anonymous reporting technologies, and other qualifying school safety strategies.

Applications through Grants.gov are due October 30, 2026, with awards of up to $2 million available.

But identifying available funding is only one part of the process. The larger question is how schools turn those dollars into safety investments that address their actual needs—and continue delivering value long after the grant period ends.

Telecor’s Funding Assistance Program helps organizations navigate that process, from identifying applicable funding opportunities and aligning project goals to developing technical documentation, cost estimates, and justification materials.

When funding opens the door to safer schools, having the right plan helps make every dollar count. Explore Telecor’s Funding Assistance Program: telecor.com/funding

A safer school isn't built around one system, one procedure, or one person. It takes an entire community working together. That idea is central to Safe and Sound Schools, a national nonprofit founded by Michele Gay and Alissa Parker, mothers who lost their daughters at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

What began in the aftermath of unimaginable loss has grown into a national resource for school communities, providing research-based tools, training, and guidance across crisis prevention, response, and recovery.

At the center of that work is a comprehensive approach to school safety; one that brings together mental and behavioral health, school climate and community, physical safety and security, emergency management, leadership, policy, health, and wellness.

As National Campus Safety Awareness Month continues, Telecor is proud to recognize Safe and Sound Schools and its work to help school communities prepare, communicate, and protect every student, every day.

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM), a time dedicated to advancing conversations around safety across college and university campuses.

Creating a safer campus is an ongoing responsibility, and at Telecor, that mission is closely connected to the work we do every day. Throughout the remainder of September, we’ll share insights into the role communication plays in building safer, more prepared environments, from strengthening redundancy and connecting multiple facilities to ensuring critical information reaches the people who need it.

Campus safety is bigger than any one system or solution. It begins with a plan and depends on the people, processes, and technology behind it.

When facilities operate independently, a system failure at one location can go unnoticed, costing staff valuable time as they rely on manual calls, emails, and texts to coordinate a response.

Centralized management creates greater visibility across locations, helping organizations identify issues earlier and communicate more consistently when circumstances change.

Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001, yet the weight of that day remains. Today, we remember the lives taken, the families whose loss continues far beyond a single anniversary, and the first responders, rescue and recovery workers, and ordinary people who stepped forward in an extraordinary moment.

For those who remember September 11, its images and stories remain deeply personal. For a generation born afterward, remembrance carries a different responsibility: to understand what happened, to learn the names and stories behind the history, and to ensure that the passage of time does not diminish their significance.

On this 25th anniversary, we remember with respect those who were lost and honor all those who continue to carry their memory.
