Evaluation is more than measuring results. It is about understanding change.

In complex development, humanitarian and peac-ebuilding programmes, a strong evaluation should answer more than one question:

Did we achieve the expected results? It should also ask:

→ Why did change happen or perhaps not happen?
→ Who benefited and who may have been left behind and why?
→ How did gender, power, context and inequality influence the results?
→ How did local partners and communities shape the intervention?
→ What were some unintended outcomes that emerged?
→ What key lessons should influence our future programming?
→ What should be adapted, scaled, redesigned or perhaps stopped?

For programmes operating in fragile, conflict-affected, climate-vulnerable and rapidly changing contexts, these questions become even more important.

At Nexus Humanitarian & Development Inc. (NHDI), we understand that evaluations should be:

Across Canada, communities continue to face the devastating impacts of wildfires. Behind every evacuation, damaged landscape and disrupted livelihood lies a much longer journey; recovery, resilience and rebuilding.

While emergency response saves lives, sustainable recovery requires strategic planning, strong institutions, reliable data & meaningful community engagement.

At Nexus Humanitarian & Development Inc. (NHDI), we believe that resilient recovery is built through evidence-informed decision-making. From recovery planning and program design to monitoring, evaluation, organizational strengthening and capacity development, effective recovery is about ensuring that investments create lasting impact and prepare communities for similar potential future challenges. The next crisis won’t begin in the field. It will begin in your assumptions. Today’s global landscape is not defined by a single event, but by overlapping shocks that are reshaping how humanitarian and development systems operate.
