Yesterday, on March 21st, I had the joy of sharing space on the International Day for the Elimination of Racism.
I was deeply honoured to be invited by the John Newcomers Center to speak on a panel for the International Day for the Elimination of Racism. SJNC continues to do exceptional work in promoting inclusion, building community, and challenging racism in meaningful, sustained ways. Their leadership in this space matters, and it shows.
The questions we were asked were not easy and nor should they be, but the environment created by Gharbiya, Mohamed Bagha and the SJNC team encouraged honesty, courage, and speaking truth to power. It was a rare and needed opportunity to name the racism that so many still face in New Brunswick.
I had the privilege of sharing the panel with the fabulous artist Fabiola Martinez Rodriguez whose reflections on the power of creativity and art in fighting racism truly stayed with me. Too often, anti‑racism work is framed only as stark, heavy labour and while it is serious work, Fabiola reminded us that beauty, imagination, and artistic expression are also powerful tools for liberation. I needed that reminder.
The audience itself was a reflection of the community we are striving to build: diverse, engaged, and deeply committed. I met incredible people from organizations such as Fry NB and Kiran Bhullar from Matter. I was also encouraged to see several individuals with political influence in the room, including city councillors, Alyson Townsend, Minister of Labour, and Daniel Mills, DM of PETL. Their presence matters because it shows a committment to further understand racism.
The questions throughout the event were thoughtful, challenging, and pushed the envelope in all the right ways. I felt like it was a space where difficult truths could be spoken and where community voices were genuinely heard. After the panel was a meal to celebrate Eid. What could be better!
Thank you again to the entire SJNC team for creating such an impactful event. I left feeling inspired, grounded, and reminded of the collective work ahead of us. Engaging Matters is always thrilled to be a part of these conversations.
