27 Years Married. 16 Years Building Roadway.
Sixteen years ago, I didn't start Roadway Traffic Supplies Ltd. because I had a brilliant business plan. It started because life gave me a wake-up call. At the time, I worked for another traffic company and spent a lot of time on the road.
Then I was diagnosed with skin cancer, and the odds weren't exactly in my favour.
At home, I had a beautiful three-year-old daughter and a wife I wasn't spending nearly enough time with. That changes your priorities pretty quickly. I realized I could always build another career. I couldn't get back time with my family. So I left the company I was working for.
Something happened that I hadn't expected. Customers I had built relationships with didn't want me to leave the industry. They encouraged me to start my own company. So I took the chance. Roadway Traffic Supplies was born. There was no big facility. No team. No departments. For the first five years, I did everything myself out of our home. The business took over both garages and eventually the basement. Sales, quotes, purchasing, manufacturing, shipping, deliveries, paperwork, cleaning—whatever needed to happen, I did it. I was the department. Eventually, Roadway grew to the point where one person simply couldn't handle it anymore.
That's when I sat down with my wife, Bobbi-Jo, and asked her to take an even bigger gamble. She had spent 20 years building a secure career at UPS, and I was asking her to walk away from that security and build this company with me. She said yes. That's when Roadway stopped being something I was building and became something we were building.
Now imagine being husband and wife, business partners, and working side by side practically 24 hours a day, seven days a week—minus bathroom breaks. We've disagreed. We've made mistakes. We've taken risks. We've had difficult years and incredible years. But we've always been heading in the same direction.
And today, that little business that once filled two garages and our basement operates from a 10,000+ sq. ft. facility and keeps growing and thriving. That's something I'm incredibly proud of. But I'm even prouder of whom I built it with. Today is our 26th wedding anniversary.
So Happy Anniversary, Bobbi-Jo. Twenty-six years of marriage. Sixteen years of Roadway. Countless long days, late nights, risks, arguments, laughs and wins along the way. And after spending almost every waking hour together, we're still married—and still building. I'd walk over and tell you Happy Anniversary in person... but you're two offices down, so Facebook seemed easier.
Here's to what we've built, where we started, and whatever we're crazy enough to build next. Happy 26th Anniversary, Bobbi-Jo.
