START WITH THE MATERIAL.

When comparing GRI-GM13 and GRI-GM17, begin with the polymer: not a blanket assumption about performance.

• GRI-GM13 is a standard specification for HDPE smooth and textured geomembranes.
• GRI-GM17 is a standard specification for LLDPE smooth and textured geomembranes.

Both specifications establish test properties and testing frequencies for manufacturing quality control. They can help establish a material-quality baseline, but they are not laws, codes or universal certifications.

The right selection also depends on:
• Expected movement and deformation
• Chemical exposure
• Subgrade conditions
• Geomembrane thickness
• Surface texture
• Installation requirements

WHY OPERATORS ARE RECONSIDERING THE DEFAULT PIPE MATERIAL

Produced water, salts, carbon dioxide and treatment chemicals attack steel from the inside. Soil and moisture attack it from the outside. The result is a maintenance cycle of inspection, repair and replacement that follows the line for its entire operating life.

Polyethylene pipe does not rust. In buried service the HDPE segment itself generally does not require cathodic protection, although steel risers, valves, flanges and transition pieces may still need coatings or cathodic protection.

The material conversation should start with the fluid chemistry, the operating conditions and the route rather than with what the last project used. HDPE is long established in natural gas distribution, and its growth across oil and gas sits in the services where pressure, temperature, fluid composition and regulations support it.

Solar site ponds do more than store water. Retention, stormwater, process water and evaporation ponds all place different demands on a liner system.

Design review should cover subgrade preparation, slope stability and interface friction, smooth versus textured surfaces, UV exposure, wind uplift, anchoring, pe*******on details and welding. UV exposure depends on whether the liner remains exposed or receives a cover, and thermal cycling at the site should be evaluated.

Confirm whether the pond will receive clean stormwater or water that may require inspection, treatment or disposal. Clean stormwater infrastructure should be separated from BESS firewater and transformer containment unless an approved treatment and management plan is in place.
