Armed with the right attitude, a strong will, a dogged determination to achieve, the entrepreneur or executive can’t help but succeed. Or so the legend goes. Having worked with scores of companies around the globe, from start-ups to Fortune 500’s, those individuals who rise to the very top of their game certainly have all the obvious qualities; but there’s something more, the one thing that gets overlooked because it’s highly personal and rarely discussed: It’s a sense of a higher purpose, a higher calling.

This state of mind goes well beyond a fearless pursuit of wealth and notoriety. This transcends all the textbooks on management and what makes the ideal executive. This is not about mindfulness. It’s not about an intense want or putting forth maximum effort. Quite the contrary: this is a force that PULLS you forward relentlessly. It’s not something you desire, but something you have to DO.

What is being called the Great Resignation with a record number of people quitting their jobs is not really about job dissatisfaction, or disaffection with the system. That’s putting the ‘blame’ on others, instead of a failure to recognize one’s own sense of self-worth.

The truly successful in business and the arts have to a greater degree than most, recognized that there’s something unique about them, something that energizes them, gives them the voltage they need to stay with the program and not give up. There is NO giving up when you’re in that state of mind because it’s what you’re supposed to do.

People get giddy, even embarrassed at the thought that they could be something more than they imagine themselves to be. Almost without exception. But figuring that out, by whatever means, and then directing that newfound purpose towards their business or a career is something to behold. It’s an entirely different level of operating.

Business is a state of mind. But more accurately, it’s a state of being.
