Following our recent post about misleading articles online about the value of coins, we'd like to bring up another angle to this discussion. Sometimes one may find a coin that looks cool, looks interesting, maybe it's really old, maybe it has a design that one is not used to, but is unfortunately nothing special.

We've compiled a list of a few examples in this article about "Items that look cool but are not valuable". Be sure to take a look!

"My coin is worth $10000! I saw it online!" is a phrase that we hear often with people contacting us. We don't blame them. There is unfortunately a lot of misleading articles online and people taking advantage that you can put anything at any price on eBay. It's hard for people who don't know about the numismatic world to parse through what is accurate and what is not. As such we have a handy dandy article about common mistakes researching the value of coins online and examples of common coins people ask us about!

It is not too uncommon when looking at coins from the early 1800's to see the phrase "Pure Copper Preferable to Paper" stamped on them. As paper currency and other forms of paper money were introduced, these strikes were made to reflect the mistrust in such currencies. This token engraved by Thomas Halliday circulated in Ireland and later in the British North American colonies.

Here's a little piece of Ireland history: Gun Money!

During the Williamite War of the late 1600's, these base metal coins were issued by James II to be redeemed for silver or gold coins upon victory. They were believed to have been made by melting down guns in order to manufacture the coins, and while that is partially true, other brass items like church bells or old cannons were also used in the production of these coins. But the nickname of "gun money" stuck around!
