There is a new typeface in the neighborhood!

Mortier, designed by Alexandre Saumier Demers, is a typeface inspired by old hand-painted advertisements on brick walls. This unique style of lettering was influenced by precomputer techniques wherein sign painters would use the brick wall on which they were painting as a reference for laying out their text. These so-called “wall dogs” developed blocky letter forms that conformed to the structure of the brickwork, allowing them to use the bricks and mortar lines as a guide for scale and spacing. The rounded rectangles were more adaptable and easier to draw than complex curves, which made painting tall letters while up in scaffolding more manageable.

T-0 We have liftoff! 🚀

Agena is pushing through max Q on her way to orbit! This new project tries to bridge the gap between the funky humanist sans typefaces of the ‘60s and the modern geometric superfamilies of today.

For the occasion, we decided to have a bit of fun with Caserne and create a collection of screen printed elements—The Agena Launchpad— (printed by Atelier Bang Bang). Photography was expertly handled by Thanh Pham and Camyl Vigneault showed us all her exemplary patience after a day wrapped in very noisy rescue blankets.

It is finally here! Baryton, a collaborative effort drawn by Étienne Aubert Bonn and My-Lan Thuong, is a display typeface with unapologetic flow.

Its large swelling serifs and gentle transition between thick and thins are directly inspired by Frank Bartuska’s beautiful Century typeface released by Photo-Lettering in the seventies.

Available in two styles, Baryton is meant to be used at really big sizes. It is at this size that you can start to appreciate all the subtle curves and inflections. There isn’t a single sharp corner in sight!

There is a new custom project up on our website. Hydro-Québec is a custom typeface designed for the clean and renewable energy provider with the same name. It's been used for almost a year at this point, but this allows for a closer look at it.

Okay. I know. It's been a while. [insert list of excuses here]
However, this is a project we really like! Caserne asked us (a long time ago) to rework the lettering for Club Kombucha. Here is the result. It's flowing. It's fresh. Just like the product itself. If you can get your hands on it, give it a try! (psst our favorite one is ginger!)

New custom project!

Bookmark is a typeface designed for Fizz, a new Canadian mobile provider.
It is a display face that attracts attention effectively without being overly provocative.

At first glance, this project looks and feels pretty familiar. However, upon closer inspection, we realize many aspects of its design are quite unconventional.

The inspiration for its shapes comes from modern geometric faces, yet it is far from geometric. The contrast is voluntarily unbalanced. The drawing is subtly asymmetric. The vertical terminals remind us slightly more of humanist typefaces. In the end, this is a typeface that differentiates itself in a group where the design codes aren't often overridden.

Nouveau projet de police sur mesure!

Bookmark est une police de caractères qui attire l'attention sans devenir trop intrusive. Elle performe très bien en titrage mais ne craint pas les textes un peu plus étendus.

Au premier regard, elle semble relativement normale, mais on ressent assez facilement qu'il y a quelque chose qui la distingue.

L'inspiration de ses formes provient clairement des polices géométriques modernes, mais pourtant, elle est tout sauf géométrique. Son contraste est volontairement débalancé. Ses formes sont subtilement asymétriques. Ses terminales verticales rappellent un dessin plus humaniste. Bref, elle se distingue dans un groupe où les codes sont rarement outrepassés.
