Today, Molsoft is launching Layaway on the Shopify App Store.

Every retail store runs an informal version of layaway already, customers asking to hold an item, partial payments collected at POS, hold periods tracked on sticky notes in the back room. The behaviour is universal. The infrastructure to support it inside Shopify hasn't existed. Until now.

Layaway lets staff reserve products from the POS cart and lock inventory for a specific customer, collect an optional deposit upfront, track partial payments over time, set custom hold periods with auto-expiry, send customers email reminders before their layaway lapses, and manage every active reservation across every location from a single dashboard.

It's the workflow your store has been running for years, finally inside the system.

Available now on the Shopify App Store in English and French

Most retailers don't see the cost of fragmented systems until it's already a problem — a stalled BOPIS rollout, a failed D2C launch, a quarter of contested forecasts.

The hidden cost shows up in stockouts, manual reconciliation, and customer experiences that fall short of what your team can actually deliver. McKinsey estimates inventory inaccuracy from data latency costs mid-market retailers 10-15% of annual inventory value.

In our latest article, we break down how fragmentation compounds, the five signals it's time to consolidate, and how to choose between a unified commerce platform and a better integration layer.

A retailer can spend months optimizing its ecommerce funnel and still lose a customer within thirty seconds.

It happens when an associate can't locate an online order by email, can't confirm whether a size is in stock at another location, or has to escalate to a manager what should be a routine exchange.

The system behind that moment is the POS. And for most retailers, it's doing less than it could.

POS conversations tend to begin and end with payments. But from the customer's perspective, the store experience starts much earlier, when a shopper asks whether another size is available, when an associate verifies product details against a PIM, when a BOPIS order needs to be located at the counter, or when a return requires validating an online purchase without a physical receipt.

When the system forces associates to work around it by checking another terminal, calling a separate location, or escalating a routine exchange, service slows, confidence drops, and the operational scaffolding becomes visible to the very customer it should be invisible to.

This is where POS becomes a customer experience tool. Its purpose is not only to close a transaction, but to reduce friction across the entire in-store interaction.

The strategic question for retailers evaluating Shopify POS isn't whether it can process transactions, since nearly every modern POS can. It's whether the POS environment in place today can support the service standard the brand wants to deliver, whether in five stores or fifty.

Most enterprise Shopify implementations don't fail at launch.

The storefront ships on time. The design clears review. Traffic processes without incident.

The problems surface later, when a second region needs to be added, when the ERP integration breaks under peak load, or when a checkout customization gets deprecated in a platform update.

By then, the agency is off the project.

The architectural decisions that created those problems were made in the first two weeks of scoping.

One product catalogue. One inventory source of truth. Four distinct brand experiences.

This is what unified commerce actually looks like in practice.

Retailers often treat POS as an operational layer. That is too narrow.

Once a business starts scaling across stores, markets, and fulfillment models, POS architecture begins to affect far more than checkout speed. If in-store purchases do not update the same customer record used online, customer profiles become fragmented, lifetime value is understated, segmentation weakens, and leadership teams are left making growth decisions on incomplete data.

That is where Shopify’s architecture becomes strategically important.

When Shopify POS and online checkout write to the same Customer object, downstream systems can respond immediately. CRM segments refresh, automation logic updates, and ad audiences become more accurate because they reflect a fuller picture of customer value across channels.

This is the real shift from using POS as a store tool to using it as part of a growth system.
In the article, we break down:
– why shared customer identity matters
– how Shopify POS supports stronger customer recognition
– what happens downstream when POS data updates the customer object
– why architecture decisions around middleware versus native consolidation become financially material at scale

For retailers expanding across channels, the question is no longer whether POS supports transactions.

It is whether POS supports growth.

Unified commerce is not just another retail buzzword.

It’s the difference between connecting channels and actually operating from one shared, real-time foundation.

For enterprise retailers, that matters more as complexity grows. More locations, more systems, more fulfillment options, more data, more risk.

In our latest article, we break down:
– What unified commerce really means
– How it differs from omnichannel
– Why it becomes essential at scale
– What Shopify supports, and what architecture still needs to solve

Because unified commerce is not something you install.
It’s something you design.
