Did you know?

Indigenous Peoples have stewarded North America’s rangelands and grasslands for generations, guided by deep knowledge of the land, ecosystems and natural cycles.

Traditional land management practices continue to play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, supporting healthy soils and sustaining these landscapes for future generations.

As part of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, we recognize the importance of Indigenous leadership, knowledge sharing and partnership in advancing sustainable grassland stewardship.

Honouring this knowledge is essential to the future of our landscapes.

Myth or Fact

❌ Myth: Soil is just dirt

✅ Fact: Soil is a living ecosystem

Healthy soil is full of microorganisms that cycle nutrients, store carbon, and support plant growth. Protecting soil means protecting the future of agriculture.

Healthy grasslands don’t stop at the soil — they connect to water too. 💧

The Brassy Minnow is a small fish that depends on clean, healthy wetlands and slow-moving waters to survive. These aquatic habitats play a critical role in supporting biodiversity across working landscapes.

In the HBAT report, the Brassy Minnow is identified as a threatened species, highlighting the importance of protecting and restoring wetland areas.

By maintaining wetlands and riparian areas, producers help support species like the Brassy Minnow while also improving water quality, forage production and overall ecosystem resilience.

Tools like the Habitat Biodiversity Assessment Tool (HBAT) help connect these pieces — showing how land and water management work together to support biodiversity.

Tuesday was a great day for our CFGA team to tour a demonstration site! Canadian Forage & Grassland Association

Travis Quirk, OFCAF lead, had the pleasure of touring the Balzer Demonstration Site with Abdullahi Keinan from AAFC. Abdullahi was at our first Ag in Motion event in 2023 and was pleased to see the progress and changes to the site since it was first set up. The site has seen some small changes to streamline rotational grazing, along with additional large tire waterers along the central corridor water pipeline to improve livestock flow and water access.

A highlight of the morning was seeing the diversity of wildlife across the pasture- jackrabbits, Western Meadowlarks, Cliff and Barn Swallows, Canada Geese, and even a male Baltimore Oriole.

Thank you to the Balzer family for their continued work and successful rotational grazing!

This month, we’re diving into an important conversation on how treaty land sharing initiatives and grazing management can work together to support strong relationships, sustainable land stewardship, and long-term grazing success.

We’re excited to welcome Laura Hoimyr from the Treaty Land Sharing Network to share insights on current initiatives, opportunities for collaboration, and how these ideas can connect to your grazing plans and ranch management.

Don’t miss this chance to learn, ask questions, and explore new perspectives on stewardship and partnership. Treaty Land Sharing Network

Did you know?

North America’s rangelands and grasslands provide essential habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including birds, pollinators and species at risk. These ecosystems depend on healthy, functioning landscapes to support biodiversity.

Sustainable grazing can help maintain the balance these species rely on by promoting plant diversity, protecting nesting areas and supporting natural habitat conditions.

As part of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, we’re recognizing the important connection between grazing management and wildlife conservation.

When grasslands thrive, so does the life they support.

Not all heroes of the grassland are easy to spot. 🐞

The Nine-spotted Lady Beetle is a small but powerful part of healthy ecosystems, helping control pests like aphids and supporting overall plant health.

Identified in the HBAT report as an endangered species, its presence is a reminder of how important diverse, well-managed habitats are for even the smallest species.

By maintaining habitat diversity and supporting beneficial insects, producers play a key role in strengthening both biodiversity and resilient agricultural systems.

Tools like the Habitat Biodiversity Assessment Tool (HBAT) help uncover these connections and highlight opportunities to support species at risk on working lands.

🌧️ Has the weather delayed your grazing plans this spring? 🌱🐄

Between the rain, snow, cool temperatures, and muddy conditions, many producers have had to adjust turnout dates and grazing rotations this year.

We want to hear from you👇

❓ Have you had to delay grazing because of weather conditions?
👍 YES
❤️ NO
😮 STILL DECIDING

Or tell us in the comments:
➡️ How far behind are you compared to a typical year?
➡️ What changes have you made to your grazing plan?
➡️ Are conditions helping or hurting pasture growth in your area?

Every year looks different, and sharing experiences helps producers learn from each other across the Prairies. 🌾
