I got you. Bringing the safe sleepy vibes so mom and baby can sleep.

When you’ve known your doula before the baby even comes and she’s helped you with other things before this point, it’s that much easier to feel comfortable handing over baby and that much easier to relax and actually sleep while she’s there.

Yes, even on Mother’s Day we cannot expect mothers to only feel positive emotions - perhaps ESPECIALLY on Mother’s Day we shouldn’t.

If your Mother’s Day includes feelings of fear, doubt, grief, loss, anger, sadness - you’re not broken. It’s ok. The goal is mixed emotions. Whatever you’re feeling I hope you let in the positive as well - self-compassion, pride, hope, and love are a few good ones to intentionally bring in with the rest, if this day is a challenge for you.

This past week my work has been focussed on the consulting side of and my role as Vice Chair of the Perinatal Mental Health Alliance of NL with the amazing board of directors and our Chair Dr. Vidyasankar. I got to share the project I’ve been leading here in NL with at the Alliance’s provincial perinatal mental health symposium. I also got to provide an educational presentation with a message about the power we collectively hold to shape generations thru quality perinatal care.

It is an absolute dream to be working shoulder to shoulder with these amazing people and pushing perinatal mental health care in the right direction for our province and the country.

I make it a top priority to provide best practice care and services to the families I work with. And it’s also a priority of mine to contribute to work that enhances the healthcare system so everyone can access best practice care and services in the perinatal period.

It’s been a busy, chaotic week. With the best humans.

My heart is full and hopeful.

Children don't need perfect mothers. Children need self-compassionate mothers who create safe environments and relationships for them and love them unconditionally through emotional connection. The rest is just details.

And you get to plant your own family tree and do things your way.

On Maternal Mental Health Day, here's a reminder that you are a good mother.

05/06/2026

Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day.

Globally, 1 in 5 mothers & birthing-persons are affected by perinatal mood disorders. Here in NL, this number increases to 1 in 4.

Join the conversation, raise awareness, and help us to work towards improving the health and wellness of families in our province.

Hello 42.

I was born a premature baby on a snowy May 3rd in 1984 to a young mom who couldn’t hold her newborn because she was rushed to the NICU and locked in an incubator. All she could do for days was hold my bruised foot through a hole in a box.

Today when the clock struck the time of my birth, I was walking with my mom in the sunny weather. Chatting.

Here’s to 42. It’s going to be a good one.

Providing breastfeeding support is how I started my journey to becoming a doula and starting Open Book. After exclusively breastfeeding my own son, people began seeking me out to help them breastfeed. And I was able to see just what a difference it made to families to have that support.

I am happy to support parents no matter how they choose to feed their infants - breast fed, bottle fed, formula fed - there is no wrong choice and Open Book supports them all.

However, if a parent WANTS to breastfeed and isn't able to, this increases their risk for postpartum mental health challenges. Therefore, increasing breastfeeding success for these parents, protects their mental health. And that's our priority.

I now have many years experience supporting dozens of families in meeting their breastfeeding goals. Simply having a support person who had a positive breastfeeding experience in your life can make a huge difference. At Open Book, we are that person for you, plus we provide prenatal breastfeeding education and a roadmap of what to expect in the early days so you don't feel so lost postpartum. We're also there providing LITERAL hands-on postpartum breastfeeding support to make sure you feel informed and confident.

Today I’m holding a 4 week old.
Tomorrow morning: a 2 day old.
Tomorrow afternoon: a 2 month old.

But it is so much more than holding.
It’s tuning in to their frequency and finding their rhythm. It’s dancing with them to that rhythm.
It’s alignment of body and breath.

It’s co-regulation.

To provide calm for a household with a tiny human is an action that goes far beyond holding them in the moment.

And for me, it’s a special kind of healing.
