In our last article we talked about one the first steps being to choose a province of interest, and then arrange as assessment by NNAS. Once you have your Advisory Report, you can approach the regulatory body of the profession in the province of your choice. Based on your Report, you can apply for a temporary permit and,
upon arriving in Canada, you will be in a position to begin practicing. You will, however, have to make application to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE), or the CPNRE for LPNs. Note that the province of Ontario has developed a new exam for LPNโs which will come into effect on January 4th, 2022.

Nursing is a skilled occupation, Skill Level โAโ. Again, you should have a minimum of CLB 7. You do not need to have a job offer if you can get nursing registration from the province of your choice. However, having a job offer does give you some extra points in Express Entry. And, if you can get a provincial nomination, you will be well on your way to an Invitation to Apply. It is also possible, depending on the situation, that your spouseโs education and ability to speak English could improve your CRS score.
Different provinces vary somewhat in their programs to attract internationally educated nurses. Those provinces and territories are Nova Scotia, Yukon, Manitoba (outside Winnipeg), BC, and New Brunswick. You can consult us for individualized information depending on your province of choice. Once your nursing registration and license is secured, the next step is, hopefully,
to receive an Invitation to Apply. When this happens, you will make the final decision to accept, and wait for your authority to land in Canada with your family.

The regulatory body in the province of your choice may require internationally educated nurses to take extra training to increase their knowledge and practice skills up to the level of that professional nursing body. If this is the case, the courses that will be required of you will be those where the regulatory body has
determined you have gaps in knowledge or skills.
For example, Ontario has a two-semester program which, among other things, aims to improve your writing, decision making, and basic technological literacy, along with your nursing skills. British Columbia will assess you individually and ask you to complete any number of courses, from one to several.
Coming to Canada as a bridging student may be an ideal path for some internationally-educated students. You can concentrate on improving your language skills, adjusting to Canadian culture, and satisfying the regulatory body that you meet the required skillset for registration.
The process is not easy, but the rewards are great. Nurses have an income which is about double the Canadian average. Demand for nurses in Canada will continue post-COVID.
