A hot tub problem can ruin a relaxing evening fast, but not every issue necessarily requires an immediate service call - although that is always your best option. With a few common tools and basic accessories, some owners can handle simple emergency repairs long enough to keep any damage from getting worse. Before you begin, however, always shut off power to the hot tub at the breaker, especially if you’re working near the pump, controls, or any electrical components.
𝟏. 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙖 𝙎𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙏𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙮
A slow leak is one of the most common hot tub emergencies. Start by checking around the cabinet, pump area, unions, jets, and visible plumbing connections. You may only need a flashlight, towel, screwdriver, and adjustable wrench.
If you find water dripping from a loose union or fitting, gently tighten it by hand or with a wrench. Do not overtighten, as that can crack plastic parts. For a small crack or pinhole in accessible plumbing, a temporary fix can be made with waterproof repair tape, silicone sealant, or a pool/spa leak patch product.
This won’t replace a proper repair, but it can help slow water loss until parts can be replaced by a professional.
𝟐. 𝙁𝙞𝙭 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙤𝙧 𝙉𝙤 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙅𝙚𝙩𝙨
If the jets suddenly lose pressure, the problem may be poor water circulation rather than a broken pump. First, check the water level. If it’s too low, air can get pulled into the system and reduce flow. Add water until it reaches the recommended level.
Next, remove and rinse the filter with a garden hose. A clogged filter can restrict water movement and make the pump seem weak. You can also try running the spa briefly without the filter to see if flow improves. If it does, the filter likely needs a deep cleaning or replacement.
Also check that all jets are open and that any diverter valves are not stuck halfway between settings.
𝟑. 𝘾𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙞𝙧 𝙇𝙤𝙘𝙠 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙪𝙢𝙥
After draining and refilling a hot tub, air can become trapped in the plumbing. This is called an air lock, and it can prevent the pump from moving water properly. Signs include humming, low flow, or jets that won’t start after a refill.
To fix it, turn off power to the spa. Open the equipment panel and locate the pump. Using a towel and adjustable wrench, slightly loosen the pump union until you hear air escape or see a small amount of water drip out. Once water appears, retighten the union and restore power.
You can also try running the jets on low speed in short bursts to help push air through the system.
