Meet Peter LeCouffe, co-founder and owner of Harrier Aerial Surveys.

Peter's path into aerial surveying began with a passion for geography, technology, and problem-solving. After serving in the Canadian Army Reserve, he studied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Selkirk College and went on to earn a Bachelor of GIS. Along the way, he completed a number of certifications in GIS, UAV operations, remote sensing, and geospatial technologies.

In 2014, Peter co-founded Harrier Aerial Surveys (together with Robert Simmerling), combining his education and field experience to help clients collect and understand accurate spatial data. Over the years, he has developed expertise in UAV mapping, LiDAR, photogrammetry, GIS analysis, and remote sensing, working on projects across a variety of industries and landscapes.

When he's not in the field or working with clients, Peter enjoys spending time with his family and volunteering with Kaslo Search and Rescue, where he shares his technical knowledge and supports the local community.

Peter's commitment to learning, innovation, and service continues to shape the work we do at Harrier Aerial Surveys.

The Kaslo Search and Rescue team enjoyed a beautiful Monday evening training session on the lake this week, led by Peter, owner and operator of Harrier Surveys. Members had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the team's ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle), learning more about its capabilities and operation in a real-world setting.

Peter volunteers with KSAR when time allows between work and family commitments.

Here's a sneak peek at some of the results from our testing with a robotic dog-mounted SLAM LiDAR scanner.

The tests went really well, and the robotic dog proved to be surprisingly capable. That said, for now, a human operator still does a better job when it comes to capturing the most complete scan.

Where this technology really shines is in places where sending a person isn't the best option. Whether it's unstable terrain, hazardous sites, or hard-to-reach areas, the robotic platform can safely collect valuable data while keeping people out of harm's way.

It's exciting to see how far this technology has come, and we're looking forward to exploring where it can make the biggest impact.

At Harrier Surveys, we are always excited to explore new ways of applying technology to solve challenges in the field. Just last week, Robert Simmerling and Peter Le Couffe, from Harrier Surveys deployed a robotic LiDAR system at the Kenville Mine near Nelson, BC, demonstrating how innovative surveying methods can improve both efficiency and safety in underground environments.

As stated by Christopher Anderson, CEO of Ximen Mining Corp.:

"At Ximen, we are committed to bringing practical new technologies into the exploration and mine-development field, and the use of robotic LiDAR surveying at Kenville is a good example of that approach. This technology allows our team and consultants to gather important underground data efficiently and safely as we continue preparing for the planned new decline. Kenville is a historic gold mine with modern potential, and we remain focused on advancing the project methodically, responsibly, and with the benefit of the best tools available."

The successful deployment highlights how emerging technologies such as robotic LiDAR are helping mining and surveying professionals collect high-quality data while reducing exposure to underground hazards. We look forward to continuing to support innovative projects that combine technical excellence with practical field applications.

We’re proud to celebrate 12 years in business!

Harrier Aerial Surveys was founded in 2014 by Robert Simmerling and Peter LeCouffe in Nelson, British Columbia. Over the past decade, we’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting and challenging projects across Canada and beyond.

Our adventures have taken us from mapping an island in Fiji following a hurricane, to creating detailed elevation models for mineral exploration projects in Northern British Columbia, and supporting micro-hydro developments on Vancouver Island.

As we mark this milestone, we’re grateful to our clients, partners, and team members who have been part of the journey. We look forward to continuing to deliver innovative aerial mapping and geospatial solutions for years to come.

Why Use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles?

Accurate, Cost Effective and Efficient Traditional surveying methods consist of either terrestrial or using a full-sized aircraft. Neither of these methods is as efficient, cost-effective or accurate as using a UAV can be. When Robert Simmerling and Peter LeCouffe got together to found Harrier Aeria...
