Our job is to help you find and keep one! The WorkBC Centre Nelson is open to all job seekers and employers.

Employment professionals are available to support you in accessing FREE services to support finding and keeping work and hiring and keeping employees.

Last Wednesday, we celebrated Disability Employment Month in Nelson with community members, employers, and clients coming together to champion inclusive employment.

A highlight of the event was hearing from three Customized Employment clients who generously shared their employment journeys and successes. We were also grateful to hear from Nelson Leafs Recycling about the value of inclusive hiring and the positive impact it has had on their workplace.

Attendees had the opportunity to connect with WorkBC staff, learn about employment supports and services, and visit the Selkirk College SOAR Program booth.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a meaningful celebration of inclusion, accessibility, and the contributions of people of all abilities in the workplace.

On September 30th, our WorkBC centres and virtual employment services will be closed to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The last residential school closed in 1996, but we know that the effects of these institutions are still felt today. This day in particular invites us to reflect on the past and ongoing impacts of residential schools and colonialism, and to consider how we can do better moving forward. It encourages us to remember the children who were taken from their homes and families to attend residential schools and never returned home. And for us to acknowledge the strength and resilience of Survivors, their families and their communities.

We encourage you to use this day to engage in reconciliation work, and to participate in local events that honour truth, healing, and community.

West Kootenay Métis Society Gathering (no cost)

September 30 from 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM at Lakeside Park Rotary Shelter
Description: An event to honor residential school survivors and those who did not come home. Features story sharing, witness accounts, food, and light refreshments. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange for Orange Shirt Day.

Truth and Reconciliation Day for Families at Taghum Hall (donations optional)

September 30 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Taghum Hall
Description: An Indigenous-led morning program hosted with cultural connector and musician Lance Ledger. Tailored primarily for children aged 8 to 12 and their caregivers (younger siblings welcome), featuring drumming, games, and storytelling to help families learn about Indigenous cultures and history. Registration required via Taghum Hall Youth Programs
