Re: turning your heat pump off during a cold snap.
The heat pump only sees the ambient temperature and not the windchill. The heat pump will continue to work at the lower temperatures but at a reduced capacity. You will probably want to have your principal source of heat (wood, electric, propane, oil) for back up during these very cool times.
The only time I would suggest turning your heat pump off is during an ice storm or heavy snowfall.

For folks worried about the wind affecting your heat pump:

The wind can turn the fan backwards with more force than the fan motor can generate when trying to start causing a no outdoor fan fault. This should lock out the heat pump.
If prevailing winds are directly at your heat pump a wind baffle would help prevent this.
With the pending storm low voltage or over voltage maybe the biggest problem. A lot of heat pumps have built in voltage protection but if not your heat pump maybe at risk of electrical damage.
If the power is flickering it would be a good idea to turn the heat pump off.

If there is a power outage many people will gear up the generator. Most gas powered generators do not produce clean power ( it is not as consistent as line power)
This “dirty” power is very hard on electronics, limit heat pump and other electronics unless you have an inverter between the generator and the equipment you are running.

An inverter is much like the power bar you plug your computer into.
Essentially the generator charges a battery ( DC voltage) then the inverter changes the DC voltage back to AC voltage.
Good practice is to limit use or not use your heat pump in very severe weather.

***Heat and humidity helpful tip***
DO NOT RUN YOUR HRV (heat recovery ventilator) IN THIS HUMID WEATHER!!!
It only draws in humid air which makes your heat pump or air conditioner work harder and less effective.
For those who do NOT have a heat pump or air conditioner, running your HRV at night WILL draw in cooler night air. Turn it off in the morning.
An HRV is a passive air exchanger meant for winter ❄️ time humidity control, not summer time.🌞🌞🌞
