➡️ Lot 51: Coca-Cola Silhouette Girl Thermometer
📅 Petroliana & Advertising | Featuring the Cliff Love Collection | Session I: June 13 | 9am EDT | Live Webcast Auction
🏷️ Estimate: CA$2,000 - $2,500

Circa 1940, Coca-Cola commissioned St. Thomas Metal Signs to manufacture two versions of the Silhouette Girl thermometer, one in red and one in green. Both Canadian variants feature the slogan, "Thirst knows no season", a phrase with roots said to trace back to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

As the story goes, a Coca-Cola executive visiting from Atlanta arrived in Winnipeg during the dead of winter and was surprised to find Canadians enthusiastically drinking ice-cold Coca-Cola despite the frigid weather. His observation, "Thirst knows no season," captured the moment perfectly - and the phrase stuck.

This example is in superb condition, with a grade of 9.5.

🗞️ NEW: Miller Times Feature | A Love for Québec Folk Artists and Their Stories

Our latest Miller Times story explores collector Susan Jacobson's decades-long journey through the world of Québec folk art, where friendships with artists often became just as meaningful as the works themselves.

The photo here shows Susan Jacobson and her daughter, Dominique, visiting celebrated Québec folk artist Wilfrid Richard at his home in 1994. Over the years, Susan made many such visits, acquiring works directly from artists while learning the stories behind their lives and creations.

A selection of works from the Susan Jacobson Collection is offered in Miller & Miller's June 11 sale of Post-War Canadian Folk Art.

✨ Current Auction Highlight ✨
➡️ Lot 76: Chevrolet Oldsmobile Neon Dealer Sign
📅 Petroliana & Advertising | Featuring the Cliff Love Collection | Session I: June 13 | 9am EDT | Live Webcast Auction
🏷️ Estimate: CA$25,000 - $35,000

Representing two of General Motors' most recognizable brands, this monumental Chevrolet Oldsmobile Neon Dealer Sign is a striking example of mid-century automotive advertising.

Produced during the 1940s to early 1950s, the sign features GM's distinctive "dual brand" design, pairing Chevrolet and Oldsmobile within a bold shield-shaped format. Widely used in automotive signage of the era, the shield motif conveyed a sense of heritage and authority while creating a commanding presence for dealerships.

Beyond its visual appeal, the sign also illustrates General Motors' influential "Ladder of Success" strategy developed by chairman Alfred P. Sloan. Sloan organized GM's brands by price and prestige, encouraging customers to remain within the GM family as their needs and purchasing power evolved. Chevrolet served as the company's entry-level marque, while Oldsmobile occupied the next rung on the ladder as a more upscale offering. By pairing the two divisions under one dealership, General Motors could appeal to a broader range of buyers while creating a natural path for customers to 'trade up' over time.

➡️ Lot 190: Good Rich Safety Tires "Mountie" Vertical Sign
📅 Petroliana & Advertising | Featuring the Cliff Love Collection | Session I: June 13 | 9am EDT | Live Webcast Auction
🏷️ Estimate: CA$35,000 - $50,000

Bold, instantly recognizable, and unmistakably Canadian, this Goodrich Safety Tires 'Mountie' sign ranks among the most sought-after advertising signs of the 20th century. 🇨🇦

Introduced as part of Goodrich’s Canadian 'Safety Tires' campaign launched in 1933, the sign prominently features a full-figure RCMP officer, chosen to embody the qualities of safety, dependability, and trust that motorists sought in their vehicles and tires. Although the RCMP image became central to the campaign, Goodrich was never officially authorized to use the RCMP likeness. During the 1920s and 1930s, the use of such "prohibited imagery" was common practice, predating the formal licensing and brand protection programs that emerged in later decades.

The sign also features the company’s distinctive 'split-word' logo, where 'Good' and 'Rich' are separated by a central 'G' enclosed within a wreath, intended to emphasize the product’s 'good' and 'rich' qualities. This version of the branding was discontinued in 1940.

A true "holy-grail" item for collectors of Automotive Advertising. Don't miss out!

🔸 Artist Spotlight | Philippe Roy | June 11 🔸

We are pleased to feature two rare and distinctive carvings by Québec folk artist Philippe Roy in our upcoming Post-War Canadian Folk Art sale.

📅 Post-War Canadian Folk Art: June 11 | 5pm EDT | Live Webcast Auction

Philippe Roy (1899–1982), from Saint-Philémon, Québec, developed a highly individual approach to folk art sculpture. By stripping away unnecessary detail and focusing on essential form, Roy created carvings that are at once playful, expressive, and imposing. His sculptures are seldom encountered today, with many examples remaining in long-held private collections.

Featured in this sale is 'Bear', an impressive example of Roy’s distinctive sculptural vision. Reduced to bold, simplified forms, the carving demonstrates the artist’s remarkable ability to capture character and presence through economy of detail. The result is a work that feels both whimsical and powerful.

Also offered is 'Zebra', a striking and unusual subject within the context of Canadian folk art, executed with the same confident simplification that defines Roy’s work.

Together, these two sculptures present a rare opportunity for collectors of Québec folk art, as Roy works seldom come to market.

➡️ Lot 217: Ford Punched Tin Smaltz Dealer Sign
📅 Petroliana & Advertising | Featuring the Cliff Love Collection | Session I: June 13 | 9am EDT | Live Webcast Auction
🏷️ Estimate: CA$60,000 - $80,000

Like Ford’s earliest automobiles glistening in brass, this three-dimensional hanging sign in the form of the iconic Ford Oval was also designed to attract attention.

Produced during the early 1910s through the early 1920s, this style of sign created a dramatic visual impact long before the arrival of neon. Its hand-punched tin surface was coated in "smaltz", a finely crushed glass or pigmented sand that shimmered in the light, while incandescent bulbs concealed within illuminated the punched openings and reflected off the metal tabs to create a striking visual effect.

Occupying a unique place between the eras of painted wooden signage and neon advertising, smaltz signs offered dealers a durable and eye-catching alternative to the hand-carved gilded signs of the period. Ford embraced the innovation, and examples such as this would have been reserved for serious dealerships seeking to project a strong presence within their communities.

The introduction of commercial neon in 1923 quickly rendered these labour-intensive signs obsolete, making surviving examples increasingly scarce today.
