Today, CLR attended the annual Ironworkers Bridge Memorial to honour the workers lost in the Second Narrows Bridge collapse.

The memorial is a reminder of the lessons learned from that tragedy and the responsibility we all share to protect workers on every project. During National Safety Month, it is a reminder that everyone shares a responsibility to protect workers and strengthen the culture of safety that continues to evolve today.

Physical, mental, and emotional well-being all contribute to a safer, healthier, and more productive workforce.

As we recognize National Safety Month and Men's Health Month this June, we are focused on the importance of holistic worker health. Supporting workers means recognizing the challenges they may face both on and off the job and ensuring they have access to resources when they need them.

A strong safety culture is built on more than policies and procedures. It is built on healthy workplaces, supportive teams, and workers who feel equipped to do their best work safely.

For men seeking support, the Province of British Columbia's Men's Wellness Program offers free virtual counselling and wellness services. Workers and employers can also access mental health and wellness resources through BuildStrong by CIRP.

In BC's unionized construction industry, safety culture isn't a poster on a wall. It's embedded in every union dispatch, every toolbox talk, and every collective agreement we sign.

National Safety Month is a reminder that advancing safety means more than reacting to incidents. It means building systems that identify hazards before someone gets hurt.
The Construction Industry of BC's Substance Abuse Testing and Treatment Program is one example of what proactive safety culture looks like in practice. It was developed jointly by CLR and the Bargaining Council of BC Building Trades Unions, not handed down from management, not imposed from above. Built together.

That distinction matters. When workers and employers share ownership of a safety program, compliance stops being about enforcement and starts being about accountability to each other.

This National Safety Month, ask yourself: does your safety culture live in your policies, or in your people?

Because the most advanced hazard recognition system on any job site is still a trained worker who feels safe enough to speak up.

Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed Canada's Building Trades Unions (CBTU) today, reinforcing the federal government's commitment to unionized construction as central to building Canada's future.

Building on yesterday's Spring Economic Update, the Prime Minister highlighted the $6 billion Team Canada Strong plan to recruit, train, and hire up to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers over the next five years. For BC employers, that includes up to $10,000 to help cover the cost of hiring and training apprentices in their first year.

With more than 1.4 million new tradespeople needed by 2033, the pipeline starts now.

Today, CLR joined labour, government, and industry partners on the steps of the BC Legislature to mark April 28, Canada’s National Day of Mourning.

We heard from families who carry their loss every day. Their presence was a reminder of why this day exists and who it’s for, and why the work of making every BC workplace safer never stops.
We share in your sorrow. We remember together. And we recommit to ensuring that every worker in every corner of this province makes it home safe.
