Why is Muscat Ottonel rare in Niagara?
In Niagara, most vineyards focus on varieties with stronger local recognition and more established demand — grapes like Riesling, Chardonnay, Vidal, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.
Muscat Ottonel is different.
It is less widely planted in Ontario, partly because it is a more delicate aromatic variety. In the vineyard, it can be less predictable, with weaker growth, sensitivity during fruit set, and higher vulnerability to diseases such as downy mildew and grey rot. For growers, that means it requires more careful attention and is not always the easiest commercial choice.
But that is exactly what makes it special.
When grown well, Muscat Ottonel offers a beautifully expressive profile — floral blossom, citrus, peach, and a gentle hint of honey.
Our Muscat Ottonel block was planted in 1999, making it a rare and meaningful part of our estate vineyard.
Not every vineyard has Muscat Ottonel.
That is why we are proud to grow it.
