MGBHLM SECURITY WILL PROVIDE A PERSON-CENTERED, CULTURAL APPROACH TO SUPPORT DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS, VISITORS, AND BUSINESSES

WITH FUNDING SUPPORT FROM THE CITY OF NORTH BATTLEFORD, THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) HAS SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH A FIRST NATIONS SECURITY COMPANY TO ASSIST WITH AN ENHANCED PRESENCE IN THE CITY’S DOWNTOWN CORE.

MGBHLM SECURITY, FROM MOSQUITO GRIZZLY BEAR’S HEAD LEAN MAN FIRST NATION, WILL PROVIDE CULTURALLY-SENSITIVE AND LOW-LEVEL SECURITY SERVICES TO DOWNTOWN NORTH BATTLEFORD. PUBLIC SPACES WILL BE PATROLLED BY MGBHLM SECURITY OFFICERS ON FOOT OR WITHIN BRANDED VEHICLES AT VARYING HOURS EACH DAY.

BID BOARD MEMBER GREG LIGHTFOOT STATED THAT THE 2026 PILOT PROJECT AIMS TO SUPPORT ALL WHO VISIT THE COMMUNITY’S DOWNTOWN BY TRYING AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH.

“WHILE CERTAIN ISSUES WILL STILL REQUIRE THE ASSISTANCE OF BATTLEFORDS RCMP OFFICERS OR COMMUNITY SAFETY OFFICERS, THE NORTH BATTLEFORD DOWNTOWN BID IS PLEASED TO COLLABORATE WITH MGBHLM SECURITY TO IMPLEMENT AN ENHANCED WELLBEING STRATEGY. THIS INITIATIVE IS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS INCREASING SOCIAL CHALLENGES WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY AND, WHERE APPROPRIATE, REDIRECT THEM AWAY FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT INTERVENTION,” COMMENTED LIGHTFOOT.

THE NORTH BATTLEFORD DOWNTOWN BID EXPECTS MGBHLM SECURITY WILL BEGIN PROVIDING SERVICES LATER THIS MONTH. THE CONTRACT IS SET TO EXPIRE ON DECEMBER 31, 2026 AND THE PILOT PROJECT WILL RECEIVE AN EVALUATION FOR ITS IMPACT. SUBJECT TO A FAVOURABLE REVIEW, THE DOWNTOWN BID WILL SUBMIT AN OFFICIAL REQUEST TO INCORPORATE ONGOING FUNDING FOR THIS INITIATIVE INTO THE 2027 CITY OF NORTH BATTLEFORD BUDGET FOR APPROVAL BY CITY COUNCIL.

From now until 10pm, North Battleford Fire Department members and CSOs will be downtown in the NBFD’s shelter bus. This is part of the Department’s cold weather strategy; where people may come in, warm up, have some soup or a cup of coffee, and even grab a toque or mitts if needed. ❄️

This extreme cold is forecasted to last a couple more days into the weekend - please be safe and take protective measures for you and those you care about to avoid the adverse effects of this weather.

If anyone saw anything or any of our other downtown businesses have video of these two individuals please help out our friends Cafe 4 U and report it to the RCMP

As we step into a new year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the legacy that continues to bring our community together.

Our Colby Cave Memorial evening raised $42,418.83 🫶🏼 A powerful reminder of the impact one person can have and the generosity of this community.

This evening would not have been possible without the incredible support of so many who showed up, contributed, and helped bring it to life. The success of the night is a true reflection of the care and commitment this community has for Colby’s legacy.

Colby’s Legacy Scholarship will remain in the Battlefords and be awarded by Jenn and Al Cave to youth who embody the values Colby lived by: kindness, inclusion, and making everybody feel like a somebody. Colby was more than a professional hockey player. He cared deeply about academics, the arts, sports, his teammates, his friends, his family, and his community. This scholarship will be a reflection of that.

The Downtown Business Improvement District is proud to play a role in establishing this legacy scholarship and remains committed to ensuring Colby’s impact continues to be felt by future generations.

With the new year also comes another season of Colby’s Kids. The next session begins Friday, January 9th, starting at 6:15 PM, and will run for six consecutive Fridays.

They are currently looking for 2–3 volunteers per session to help on the ice. If you’re interested in volunteering, or would like to get involved with the Legacy Scholarship or Colby’s Kids, please contact Jenn Cave.
