As we enter into this Easter season, take the time to slow down, enjoy the time with family, friends and loved ones. Enjoy the treats, chocolates, egg hunts. Cherish the laughs, memories and smiles.
Many of us across Eastern Ontario have had to make some sacrifices the last 3 days, as the result of a severe ice storm. Some of us have lost trees, branches or shingles. Some have had to sacrifice power, heat, telephone lines and even running water. In fact, even as I write this letter we are still on emergency power. But it seems fitting somehow, because all this discomfort and sacrifice we have been forced to make in the last 3 days, is nothing compared to the ultimate 3 day sacrifiice.
Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross, had a crown of thorns placed on his head, stripped of His clothing, His dignity and yes—His life. He was killed for the sins of the world….. took the place and the penalty of death for you and for me. But that’s not the end of the story……that was Day 1…Good Friday.
There is a story of a man who asked “Why is it called GOOD Friday? Nothing Good about it…..my Lord died on a cross that day.” His friend replied “How would you feel if you were supposed to die, and someone offered to take your place?” “Well, I guess I would feel pretty GOOD…”
On the Second day, there was mourning and weeping by His loved ones.
But on the Third day…He arose from the Grave. Walked on Earth among His friends, and ascended to Heaven, to prepare an enternal resting place for all who choose to follow Him. His resurrection is detailed in the Gospel of Mark:
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” ~Mark 16:4-7
For the whole Easter story, I invite you to read Chapters 15 and 16 of the Gospel of Mark. I pray that you all have a blessed Easter season.
