For nearly a century, natural fires have been suppressed, but the fuel never disappeared.

In dense, overgrown stands, smaller trees die, fall, and become ladder fuels, creating the conditions for fires that are harder to control.

Thinning may not stop every wildfire, but it can reduce fire intensity, create access trails for crews, and improve the chance that water actually reaches the ground.

And in many cases, the work can help pay for itself through timber sales.

So why aren’t we doing more of it?
