After a Lay off.

Not so long ago, I was laid off. I was not too shocked. My role was outsourced. 🙂

Nothing to do with performance. End of the day everything comes down to profit margins.

The point is it took me someone who coaches others, 9 months to find the right job.

Fortunately, I was in a situation to be picky. I invested 3 months in studying employment Law to update my resume. I spent time everyday roughly 1 hour networking. And, I spent 3 hours every day applying to Jobs.

Everything is possible with the right attitude and executed the right way.

There are many different ways to network
1. Word of mouth: an oldie but a goodie. Talk to people you know and maybe they will talk to people they know and spread the word that you are looking for a new role
2. Connecting requests on LinkedIn or any other job boards: remember people may be getting 100s of connection requests. Make sure yours stands out.
3. Connect with recruiters, hiring managers, job posters etc.

Interview Tip

When given a chance to ask questions, ask them. You can ask:
1. More details about the role, team or the project if not already mentioned in the job description or during the interview
2. Details about why the role was created
3. About the project culture

And so on. Asking pertinent questions will not only arm you with more information it will also show the interviewers your line of thought.

In my 15 years of working in Human Resources and particularly recruiting, the most important advice, I like to give is "Read".

Read the job description completely
Read your own resume thoroughly
Read your own LinkedIn page
Read the job poster's or Interviewer's profile
Read the company's description whose jobs you wish to apply
Read the profiles of people whose shoes you wish to fill someday

And once you have spent enough time reading then act/apply/interview

This still doesn't guarantee you a job or an interview but definitely will put you ahead of the pack and will give you a good idea about what improvements or changes you need to make.

Interview Anxiety.

Many people do not change jobs simply because they cannot handle the stress and anxiety of interviewing. There is no clear way to solve this. However we can try with some simple steps:
1. Try to resolve stress and anxiety in general. Practice meditation, listen to podcasts, gardening what ever works to keep calm.
2. Tell yourself that it's just people interviewing you. You are not joining the avengers!
3. Read each and every line in your resume and write down every question that can be anticipated.
4. Attend interviews and make notes of what went right and what went wrong.
5. Practice with mock interviews with friends, family or an Interview coach!

Lastly, be patient.

I recently found out that there are four types of self-confidence namely:
1) 'Unwarranted' confidence.
2) 'Pasted on' confidence.
3) 'I've already done it' confidence.
4) 'Effort will lead to results' confidence.

Most of us are either 1,2 or 3. Few are 4. During job interviews you need to project 4. Remember all your answers should project no 4 with Maybe some of no 3. If you feel you are getting many interviews but not able to crack them confidence is one of the things you might need to work on. Reach out to a interview coach who can guide you on your journey.

What not to write in resumes:

1. Vague designations or Titles
2. Words like very good or excellent experience.Use action verbs instead
3. Refrain from sentences like " involved in " clearly mention what, why and how
4. Hobbies unless relevant to the role applying
5. Contact for references. There is no need to mention this. If required you will have to provide later
