Face to Face Matters

This morning, I flew out to Montreal to be with the staff of one of my longtime clients. We have been working together for about 10 years - sometimes leadership coaching, sometimes team coaching and most recently strategic planning, new business development and marketing consulting.

This company moved from Ontario to Quebec about 2 years ago and the CEO and I have kept in touch but I had not been with his team for a while.

After a number of years, coming to Montreal to see their work space, the space where they innovate, new faces in the company and getting a chance to interview them all and engage them all in the process of planning the future of the company definitely trumps any amount of emails, Skype calls and written documents.

Reading their expressions, feeling the energy of the room, brainstorming and building on each other's ideas....nothing beats face to face connection.

And as a bonus, I get to retire for the night looking out at this gorgeous spot so I can do it all again in the morning.

The Dance of Managing Multi-Layered Relationships

Got a client who is also a friend?

Got an advisor who is also a friend who is also a client who is also a mom of one of your kids' friends?

Got a wife who is also your boss?

Got a sibling who is also the cofounder of your business with you?

Got a best friend who is also your biggest client?

Got a staff member who is also your brother in law?

These multi-layered relationships are all real live situations in my life or in the lives of my clients. Each require finesse, clear boundaries, the ability to shift roles quickly and the highest degree of trust, respect and honour for ALL levels of the relationship.

Many people say no to the complexities of having these multi-layered relationships but I say YES! Bring them on.

These complex networks form the basis of my most joyful moments, most grateful conversations and most lasting friendships.

It requires a commitment to practising the dance of the relationship at all its levels.

And the richness and power in them are worth it.

Chief Storytelling Officer

My CEO group had a chance to listen to Don Kerr today. Don is a good friend, a honest colleague, a trusted advisor and a phenomenal storyteller.

I invited him into today to drum into us the importance of storytelling. I've always believed that the best leaders are also great storytellers. They share their lives and their learnings in ways that trigger an emotional connection to us, resulting in followership and tribal outcomes.

What if we were to name ourselves Chief Storytelling Officers of our companies? What if our roles as CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs and specialized practitioners could embrace the skill of storytelling to help us brand and communicate our businesses? What if our stories changed the lives of people to whom we told them?

My learning today is that I do a really good job for myself and my clients in telling a story about the future. I create vision stories, strategic plans and the possible future scenarios with my clients everyday. And I really don't do a great job relaying a story of my past and having it be useful learning, positioning or branding for my own company.

My homework is to write my own story - from start to now. It's a big task and I'm excited to dive into it.

I wonder how it is for you as the storyteller of your life and your company?

Manic Coffee, Manic Convo, Magic Clarity

I met my friend Mark in Toronto today at Manic Coffee - a coffee joint with character.... and yeah, that's in design AND in the people.

Sipping my chai latte, Mark and I dove into a crazy brainstorm about a new business idea I have. Me with the embryonic concept and he with the strategic design thinking mind. Just what we both needed.

It's a gift to be able to brainstorm with someone - to build on each other's thoughts, to zig zag from idea to better idea, to leap from better to awesome.

And I walk away, not only satiated from my latte but exponentially clearer about the "what" and "how" of my newly forming creation. Super grateful to Mark for his wit, wisdom and brains today and super excited about what's to come.

Stay tuned.

What I Learned in Meditation Class Tonight

Here are three things I never knew until today...

1. We only breathe through both nostrils 4 times a day - at high noon, at midnight, at sunrise and at sunset. All other times, one nostril works more dominantly than the other.

2. If we want to relax, we should breathe through the left nostril. I.e. when you can't fall asleep, lying on your right side allows the top nostril (left) to dominate and help you fall asleep.

3. If we want more energy, we should breathe through our right nostril. I.e. When you are falling asleep at the wheel, instead of downing another cup of coffee, closing off the left side and breathing just through the right nostril will give you a burst of energy.

I have to say that I've never noticed these things but intuitively, they make perfect sense. Now I'm going to be mindful and notice.

Who knew?

How To Reconnect in a Sweet Sweet Way

This weekend was the first of 4 weekends, of an organizational systems and coaching relationships course I am taking to help enhance my skills in coaching relationships that appear in life, work and community. Filled to the brim, I have been itching to practice all the skills I learned this weekend and who better than with my hubby!! (I know, not usually a good idea to coach your husband but read on....it's a good story....)

Michael and I have recently been like two ships in the night. Since the beginning of the new year, he has been crazy busy at work with lots of big changes going on with his team and his company and I have been busy with some travel, some heavy client work and family events and activities. And then of course, I was away all weekend at this course. Some days, it's a quick kiss in the morning and then we might get 30 minutes connecting as we do the dinner dishes. And that's been about it.

Saturday at this course, I am so grateful to have been reminded of this very basic and sweet connection skill that I brought home with me that night for Michael and I.

Sitting facing each other, one of us says "what I appreciate about you is....." and then the other person says "thank you". And then that person says "what I appreciate about you is...." and you just keep going. It's called an Appreciation Loop. So simple and yet so powerful.

Appreciation goes such a long way and so many of us forget say it out loud, even if we feel it. Appreciation is a powerful love language that shows us that we are loved.

So after just 15 minutes of this beautiful loop of appreciation between Michael and I, our reconnection felt really present and gave us a chance to anchor in it, while the busyness of our lives have started up again today.

If you haven't had a chance to try this activity with someone you love, someone who you work with, a child, a parent, a fellow volunteer, I would urge you to try it.

My guess is that you'll feel a greater connection, you will feel the beauty of giving and you will experience the magic of receiving.

All good things. Enjoy.

Underground Groove

My local yoga studio has a new class called Underground Groove. I've been looking for an untraditional dance class for years now and it showed up right here - right where I already go 4 days a week. How perfect.

I love this class because it's not even really a class. It's a safe space for self expression - with some pretty groovy tunes, with no judgment and lots of opportunity for experimenting with our bodies. It's not just a great workout - I actually feel more creative afterwards so I think it sparks something deeper within me.

A girlfriend of mine gets her self expression needs met through acrylic painting, another client gets it through singing in a rockabilly band, my husband gets it through playing his bright red telecaster and another friend gets it by listening to her body and doing whatever "it" feels like - often this involves her standing on her head in the most bizarre places and yes, sometimes even in public!!

Whatever your version of underground groove is, get on it! We are meant to fully live our expressions, experiment with what our miraculous bodies are capable of and get curious about what we have stored inside of us.

I find myself having a bit more of a groove when I'm not underground too these days.....:)

How much should you spend on professional development?

Experts say a minimum of 3% of our budgets is a good guideline. So with a $100,000 budget, spend at least $3,000 on professional development.

Courses, training programs, webinars, coaching, books, workshops - your learning is important. It's an investment in your future.

I start a 4 month training program this weekend. So excited to be a sponge and learn a whole set of new coaching skills.
