Inuit culture is at the heart of our operations at the Mary River Mine and is woven into the way we work, gather, and connect. It’s a value that we live each and every day, which is why Baffinland recently hired a team of five Inuit carvers from Igloolik to create a custom sculpture for our mine site.

The artists, lead by master carver Esau Kripanik, will transform a massive 16-tonne boulder, made of gabbro, into a series of intricate carvings that will tell a story of Inuit ways of life in the region. It is believed it was transported within glacial ice to the area, finally coming to rest at our Site, where it was discovered. The boulder was specifically chosen for its exceptional strength and durability, allowing the carvers to work with the stone without it chipping or fracturing, and ensuring the finished sculpture withstands the harsh Arctic environment.

At Baffinland, we’re pleased that this initiative supports local artists while also creating a space that celebrates Inuit art and traditions.

Baffinland recently hosted the Marine Environment Working Group (MEWG) and Terrestrial Environment Working Group (TEWG) meetings under the new independent chairperson, Qajaq Robinson. These meetings provided an opportunity for members to engage under her leadership and continue discussions on environmental monitoring priorities as it pertains to the Mary River Project.

The meetings brought together government regulators, Inuit organizations, and environmental non-governmental organizations, including Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Government of Nunavut, Makivvik, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), North Baffin Hunters and Trappers Organizations, Oceans North, Parks Canada, Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), Transport Canada, and World Wildlife Fund - Canada.

Participants reviewed results from Baffinland’s 2025 environmental monitoring programs and discussed the monitoring programs planned for the 2026 field season. These meetings and discussions support continued collaboration, knowledge sharing, and program improvement.

Baffinland was pleased to recently welcome the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to our Mary River Mine Site.

CAF members spent two days at Mary River conducting a series of tests on our runway. These activities were part of their routine operational readiness efforts, which help the CAF assess and maintain its ability to operate in northern and remote environments.

While Baffinland’s focus is on safely mining Nunavut’s high-grade iron ore, our aviation infrastructure is regularly used to help in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and other emergencies. Due to our strategic location on the northern tip of Baffin Island, Baffinland is often the first line of support. Our operation provides crucial infrastructure including a runway, deep-water port, refuelling station, medical facility, and maintenance site.

Additionally, we’re currently planning to build a deep-water port at Steensby Inlet that will be connected to the mine by a southern railway. The Steensby Component will further strengthen Canada’s presence in the north by enhancing emergency response capabilities and offering a staging point for the Canadian Coast Guard and Armed Forces.

Arctic infrastructure are key components of Canadian sovereignty, and Baffinland is proud to offer our support.

With the 2026 shipping season underway, we’re pleased to introduce this year’s Shipping Monitor team: Jane Innuaraq, Amanda Koonoo, Marina Kunnuk, Keisha Maktar, Lillian Milton, Mavis Quaraq, and Rhoda Quaraq.

Shipping Monitors serve as a direct link between the community and Baffinland. Throughout the shipping season, they actively observe and monitor all vessels travelling to and from Milne Inlet, provide daily updates on social media and VHF radio, and answer questions about the Project and our mitigation measures. They also report on vessel activity and communicate any deviations from our industry-leading mitigation measures, including our voluntary 9-knot vessel speed limit.

At Baffinland, we are committed to providing meaningful training and career development opportunities for Nunavummiut. In addition to the specialized Shipping Monitor training they receive, this team also participates in ongoing skills and professional development training to support future career growth and success.

Baffinland is pleased to share that the 2026 Shipping Season has begun. Leading up to the season, our teams closely monitored ice conditions and maintained regular communication with the Mittimatalik Hunters and Trappers Organizations (MHTO) and the Hamlet of Pond Inlet. This collaborative approach helped support a safe and appropriate start to the shipping season, following the closure of the floe edge on July 2 and confirmation that ice conditions are 3/10 concentration as of July 19.

The first convoy of vessels, consisting of 2 tug boats and 3 ore carriers, entered the Regional Study Area at approximately 6pm ET on July 28th, and passed Pond Inlet at approximately 6am ET on July 29th.

Throughout the entire shipping season, we will continue to implement measures to reduce vessel noise and mitigate potential impacts on the species who call these waters home. This is consistent with measures we’ve implemented in previous years and includes:

• Scheduling vessel transits to avoid breaking ice at the beginning of the shipping season.
• Reducing vessel speeds to minimize noise and disturbance.
• Implementing a designated marine shipping lane.
• Avoiding ecologically sensitive areas.
• Requiring vessels to maintain minimum distances from marine mammals and to comply with established mitigation protocols.

Additionally, we have hired and trained a team of Inuit Shipping Monitors who are based in Pond Inlet and will provide regular shipping updates to the community throughout the season. Baffinland was pleased to support the Mittimatalik Hunters and Trappers Organization (MHTO) by providing helicopter assistance for the repair and maintenance of the VHF repeater on Bylot Island.

Reliable VHF repeaters play a critical role in northern communication, extending radio coverage and helping vessels, land users, and emergency responders maintain contact in remote areas where other communication options are limited. Being that Pond Inlet is a shipping community, operational repeaters enhance situational awareness, support safe navigation, and strengthen communications between vessels and local stakeholders throughout the shipping season.

Baffinland shares a common interest in ensuring these important communication systems remain operational, as they contribute to safe marine activity in the region.
