The dark, cold mornings are back, and this Sunday, we set the clocks back one hour for the “fall back” time change. What used to be a blissful extra hour of sleep now means an extra early wake up for the little ones! If you are dreading this upcoming change, take a breath, it will all work out! Here are a few strategies for the week leading up to the time change:
🕑 If you have a pretty good routine and an established bedtime that you’d like to keep, you can start moving bedtime LATER by about 10-15 minutes each night (or every few nights) throughout the week. You will gradually move bedtime an hour later, which, after the time change, will become your normal bedtime.
🕠 If you have a very sensitive baby, or one who tends to get overtired easily, you can still shift bedtime later, but maybe only by 10 minutes at a time and keep that consistent for a day or so before moving even later.
🕗 Similarly, you can wait until after the clocks change and work on pushing bedtimes gradually until you meet up with the new time. This would mean in the beginning that you are putting your child to bed an hour earlier than usual.
🕗 Another option is to do nothing! Be flexible, don’t sweat it when your routine is a little off, and be patient with your little ones as they adjust. Watch for their cues and try to avoid an overtired baby. Get yourself to bed earlier in anticipation of an earlier morning, or call in some extra help if you need support with naps (for the babes or yourself!)
