Closing up the cottage this fall? There’s usually more to it than we think.
Every year, cottages, cabins and seasonal properties across Newfoundland start getting tucked away for the colder months.
At first, closing up can sound fairly simple — clean things up, put a few things away, lock the door and head home.
But once you start thinking through the property itself, the weather, water systems, maintenance, security, storm preparation and what happens after you leave, the list can get long pretty quickly.
So we’ve put together something useful.
HEWI’S Property Services has created a FREE Newfoundland Cottage Closing Checklist to help cottage and seasonal-property owners think through the important things that should be considered before leaving a property for the season.
The checklist covers areas such as:
• Interior preparation
• Water and plumbing considerations
• Exterior and weather readiness
• Security
• Maintenance concerns
• Storm and winter planning
• What should be checked after the property is vacant
• Ongoing seasonal property monitoring
It’s designed to show you the what, without trying to turn a checklist into a how-to manual for work that may be better handled by the appropriate professional.
Sometimes the biggest benefit of a checklist is realizing there were a few more moving parts than you expected.

The short form only takes a couple of minutes, and your checklist will be available immediately after you submit it.
There’s no obligation to book services with us. We’re also using the responses to better understand what Newfoundland cottage and seasonal-property owners find most challenging, so we can continue building services around what people actually need.
If handling the closing, coordinating trades, or keeping an eye on the property after you leave feels like more than you want to manage yourself, HEWI’S Seasonal Property Support can help with those pieces too.
