Why do we usually do this in the middle of the night? 🍇🚜

On one of the rare cooler South Okanagan mornings, John Stevens was out in our Rattlesnake Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench, helping protect the vines from powdery mildew with a low-rate sulphur application.

Powdery mildew is one of the biggest fungal diseases affecting grapevines, and sulphur has been used safely and effectively for centuries to help prevent it from taking hold.

John Stevens (a.k.a John John) was running our John Deere 5093E with a Turbo-Mist foliar sprayer, the largest tractor in our fleet. As our vineyard and cellar hand, he works alongside winemaker John Pullen, helping carry the hard work from vine to bottle. In the heat of a South Okanagan summer, that takes more than skill, it takes passion, dedication, and a deep respect for the vines.

Once temperatures climb above 26°C, we pause to avoid stressing the canopy, which is why this work is usually done overnight.

And trust us, it gets hot out there. Hats off to everyone working in the vineyards this summer.

Arguably the most frightening piece of vineyard equipment, the hedger!

There are many reasons for hedging beyond keeping your vineyard trim and tidy.

Hedging also:

- Improves sunlight pe*******on into the canopy, helping grapes to ripen more evenly
- Increases air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal disease
- Encourages vines to direct more energy towards fruit development rather than excessive shoot growth

When John isn’t out in the vineyard or working in the cellar, you’ll often find him in the tasting room doing what he loves most, pouring wine, sharing the story behind the wines and talking about the passion, care, and work that goes into every bottle.

With Father's day coming up, we celebrate the generations behind our vines.

Last week, our cellar and vineyard assistant John Stevens, proprietor Kim Pullen, and our winemaker John Pullen, spent a couple of long, arduous days out in the elements installing posts to support a new block of baby Malbec at our Rattlesnake vineyard.

No doubt, it was hard work! But there's something special about watching two generations work side by side to help the next generation of vines to thrive.

This Father's day, we raise a glass to family, legacy, and the hands that help our vineyard to grow!

Rainmaker is pleased to present this most delightful human (our very own hospitality manager)! If you don't find him behind the bar providing guests with an incredible and memorable tasting experience, it's because he's working behind the scenes on innumerable other projects to make your time at Rainmaker top notch!
