A good name is of great value. This is something my parents taught me when I was very young.

They had worked very hard to build a good name in the community by treating people with respect and by being ethical and trustworthy in their dealings.

Being a part of a family with a good name has benefits and everyone who shares that name also shares in the benefits.

But, my parents pointed out, along with that privilege comes an obligation to uphold that good name.

There are certain behaviours and ways of doing things that are required, and adherence to these “ways of doing things “ has two effects. The first is that if you adhere to these principles, behaviours and ways of doing things you will have a much better chance at leading a successful life. Number two is that adherence to these principles and behaviours will ensure that you are doing your part to uphold the good family name.

The same applies in business. The “Family Name” is “The Brand”. There is power in a brand with a good reputation. Everyone who shares that good name can enjoy the privileges and the benefits that come with it. But just like in the family there are also certain behaviours and ways of doing things that are required. We call this the Operating System.

Adherence to the operating system “these ways of doing things” has the same two effects. Firstly you will have a much better chance at being successful in business and secondly you will also be doing your part to uphold the brand.

Warren Buffett said, “It takes 20 years to build a good reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it“ Don’t let this happen.

Have you taken the time to clearly articulate what systems, values and principles have made you successful to this point? Once you do, these become your operating system and it is your operating system that will protect the integrity of your brand. //

One of my favorite definitions of the C.A.R.E. acronym is Create A Remarkable Experience. Just doing a good job isn’t going to be enough if you are trying to build a great company. To stand out from the competition you have to go above and beyond what is expected, you need to be remarkable.

Creating a remarkable experience for customers doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money or take a lot of time. Think about the “Baker’s dozen”. To make you feel special and brighten up your day the baker throws in an extra donut for free. The lawn mowing team brings up your recycle and garbage bins from the end of the driveway (Grounds Guys), the moving company brings you a cup of coffee the way you like it because they know that you’ve already packed up your coffee maker. (YouMoveMe), the plumbers that put on boot covers before entering your home. (Mr Rooter) Maybe its something as simple as a smile and wave. Get together with your team and figure out what your company can do to create a remarkable experience consistently.

The definition of remarkable is “Something worth remarking about”. When you make customers feel “VIP” they will definitely find it worth remarking about. //

It all starts with a dream. Sometimes as adults we forget to dream big dreams like we did when we were kids. It could be because we become too practical or too realistic to dream. It could be because we’ve been disappointed in the past by dreams that didn’t work out to our expectations. Maybe someone told us to stop being a dreamer and go get a real job… whatever the case may be, many of us have stopped dreaming. We can be pretty good at setting goals and dreams for our professional life, but what about for our personal and family life?

Close your eyes and think about what excites, energizes and inspires you – what scares you. If your dream doesn’t scare you a bit than its not big enough. Go ahead, dream big. Don’t try and figure out how you are going to do it right now, that will come. When you are ready to realize your dream it will no longer be impossible because you won’t be the same person by then. You won’t be in the same financial or personal or time strapped situation that you are in now. Your dream will drive you to change all of that. //

Working together as a family is a true joy. The children have such a grasp of technology, such youthful energy and ambition and so much passion for what they do.

Our mission is to inspire a million acts of CARE and the kids are such excellent ambassadors of that message. In our work C.A.R.E stands for “Create A Remarkable Experience” not just for our customers but for our colleagues, classmates, and communities. This message is for everyone - it transcends business and overflows into family life and so much more.

When CARE becomes our motto we begin to open our eyes to the needs around us rather than having tunnel vision on what’s directly in front of us. The results are astounding!

The incredible group of leaders at the NAPA Canadian National Conference get it! These people know what it means to create a remarkable experience. Thank you for inviting me to be your keynote speaker this year! It was a great privilege.

It was great to spend some time with Orlando Bowen and his parents. He is a former CFL football player and now an extraordinary speaker with a message of hope and forgiveness for all the world to hear.

To C.A.R.E for me, means that I need to Create A Remarkable Experience every opportunity I get. It was like that in the service business and it’s no different today as a keynote speaker.

My career has taken me through several complete reinventions of myself. First I went to college to be an arborist so I could contribute to the family biz. Next I went through the school of hard knocks to learn how to be successful in business. Next I went back to school to learn how to be a good franchisor and became a certified franchise executive. Today I am an exec coach and keynote speaker, continuously learning how to be better at what I do. My passion is to help companies create a culture that makes employees feel alive rather than having the life sucked out of them. We spend a good portion of our lives at work so we might as well make it a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

What is your greatest challenge with workplace culture?
