When preparing for economic uncertainty most leaders fall back into defensive mode and the traditional practices of cut and protect. They cut people, operating costs, CAPEX, R&D and CSR programs to protect cash and the company. Sometimes it feels like the only way forward but the results of this ‘cut and protect’ strategy raises a multitude of problems for business continuity and potential.

While traditional practices like this may have worked successfully in years past, we are in a new world of work now.

-The markets are different
-The economic environment is different
-Our working relationships with talent and customers are different.

Cut and protect just isn’t as effective a strategy for overcoming economic uncertainty in this different world we work in now.

Over 70% of employees would or are considering leaving their jobs. It is a staggering number but not surprising when we look at the underlying reasons.

We are adjusting to rapidly changing conditions at work and in the world. We are learning to work differently, learning and unlearning, often at the same time. We are juggling professional and personal responsibilities with few, blurry boundaries. We are filled with uncertainty and stress. But, there is hope. And opportunity.

We are in this together, new data shows that managers are equally stressed as employees, so let’s rely on each other for support, listen to each other for new ideas and solutions for moving on, through and forward to better.

Respect, trust and empathy by over-communicating, over-nurturing and over-delivering will protect your business from the Great Resignation and create new opportunities by keeping your talent and customers engaged, motivated and focussed on a brighter future.

If you know , you know it was founded on the belief that people intrinsically want to be better.

Our purpose is to make the human struggle more elegant by elevating work to a place of meaningful contribution to their better life.

Da Vinci played a large part in the foundation of this business, he saw that striving to be better is, in the end, a human failing because we are never done but, anything that somehow advances us, enhances us or improves us is a worthy contribution to the human journey.

Leonardo may not have believed in himself, all the time (does anyone?) but, he passionately believed in humanity and our very human qualities of emotion, reason, curiosity and courage. He understood our frailties. In all this Leonardo saw hope and possibility for progress and advancement.

I think this is what Leonardo was lamenting. He was not lamenting for the work left undone but for the possibilities of what would come after him. I think he was lamenting the fact that he would no longer be part of humanity’s greatest gift; our drive to become better, to advance and to leave this world better than we found it.

Don’t settle for being best because you won’t be… for long.

In our complex, fast-changing world you need to be better than best.

Best Vs. better:
Being best is a point reached. It’s an important milestone and one to be celebrated for sure. But, it is a finite point in time, a point that is already behind you. The concept of being better is continual and infinite. It is a milestone that is always in front of you, inspiring you and your organization to be better, every day.

Better beats best:
1️⃣Better is in our nature. It is human nature to leave our mark on, and to believe that, this world is a little bit better because of us. It is why our drive to strive, reach and ultimately accomplish is a visceral part of our core being. The possibility of better performance becomes exponential as more people onboard the mantra of better is better than best.
2️⃣Better is Cultural. The mantra of better is a universal mentality that can capture the ambition of many versus the singular mentality of being best. Only one can be best but all of us can be better. Better cultures thrive on the friction of fresh thinking and collaboration. “Better” is a path to success and improved performance.
3️⃣Better is Competitive. “Best” thinking is a byproduct of the traditional, scalable efficiency model that focuses on maintaining best position on price, speed and quality. To become better versus best means listening to customers for new and emerging needs, watching for shifts in market conditions and trends.

So, don’t settle for best. It is fleeting. Aim to be better. It is how successful organizations get ahead and stay ahead.
