When I started doing my family history, I came across the fact that Alfred Kershaw & his wife, Martha Robertshaw, born & raised in Clayton, Yorkshire, converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints & moved to the USA. Alfred’s younger brother, Schofield, also converted & went to the USA. He married Rebecca Maisey in Utah. Alfred Kershaw is a distant relation. Seeing they had converted to the LDS Church fascinated me. So, I quickly decided that further research was needed.
There were so many questions I had once I started investigating.
Why? When? How? What was it like for them converting, what obstacles did they face? The decision to emigrate, how the journey was from Yorkshire to the US, then on to Utah? What difficulties they must have faced. One of the things I discovered is that Alfred & Martha’s daughter, Eunice, after losing her husband William Lamborn, married his brother Edwin. She became a polygamous wife because Edwin was already married to Mercy Weston.
Mercy’s parents Nehemiah Weston & Roseanne Gifford had also emigrated to the US after converting to the LDS Church. Mercy’s sisters, Louisa & Anna (Hannah) were sister wives as well as sisters. Their husband, Nathaniel Hodges then took a 3rd wife.
