This week, Fire Training Associates instructors travelled to CFB Halifax Naval Fire Service for in-service training on the Holmatro Stackable Air Bag System.

Quality instruction starts with instructors who continue to train, learn, and stay current with the equipment and tactics we bring to the fire service.

Refresh rate on a thermal imaging camera is how many times per second the image updates on the screen.

Why does that matter? Because during a search, the image you’re seeing may already be outdated by the time your brain processes it.

Low refresh rates create lag and delayed feedback while scanning, exactly when firefighters are moving fast, low, and blind.

Some critical factors to evaluate in any thermal imager are refresh rate and screen resolution. One affects how real-time the image feels. The other effects how much detail you can interpret. Both directly influence search efficiency and situational awareness.

Cost often drives purchasing decisions, but cheaper cameras usually achieve that price by sacrificing refresh rate or resolution or in some cases insulation from thermal impact. The real question is whether the savings are worth the operational compromise when conditions are deteriorating or we need to make a move in a life and death situation.

Buying a thermal camera isn’t about features, it’s about performance when it matters most.

Last weekend Fire Training Associates had the opportunity to host a booth at the annual Maritime Fire Chiefs Convention.

Over our 2 days there, we had the opportunity to connect with many respected fire service leaders from across the Maritimes, sharing the mission of our company and what we have to offer.

Vent enter search (VES) is the action of clearing a window of all glass, making entry into that room, isolating the space and performing a search for victims.

Performing vent enter search (VES) is a tactical decision we must be prepared to make when the facts and information in front of us are telling us to VES.

Some possible indicators that may influence us to VES but not limited to:
- Known victim location
- Access blocked off to rooms by fire or compromised hallways / floors
- Only room not involved in fire
- When conditions are allowing

Vent enter search is a calculated risk we must be prepared to make based on size ups, completed 360's, training and experience.

Recently, Fire Training Associates travelled to Cambridge-Narrows to deliver a class that was focused on short staffed rural engine company operations and down and dirty search considerations and techniques.

This class emphasized on effective water application and proven techniques for advancing and maneuvering the initial hand line helping us be successful when crossing the threshold with a limited amount of people.

Members also spent time developing search skills, focusing on a rapid but thorough primary search and ways to drag, carry and remove victims. We also covered VES, highlighting the importance of a targeted search and how to enter, exit and remove victims from windows.

Training like this will help build confidence and muscle memory within your members, allowing them to complete critical tasks safely and efficiently.

Sunday, June 14, 2026, members of Fire Training Associates travelled to Tobique First Nation to provide fire protection coverage for the community while local firefighters attended funeral services for Firefighter Tia Martin.

Tobique First Nation is a community that holds a special place in our hearts. We are fortunate to call many of its firefighters our friends, and it is also the home community of one of our instructors, Nathan Pirie. Nathan dedicated many years of service to the department, rising through the ranks to Deputy Chief, and continues to support the department whenever he can.

In times of loss, the fire service family comes together. It was a privilege for our team to help ease some of the burden on the members of Tobique First Nation Fire Department so they could spend time with their families, friends, and fellow firefighters while honouring one of their own.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve such a strong and resilient community during this difficult time.

Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences remain with the family of Firefighter Tia Martin, the members of Tobique First Nation Fire Department, and the entire Tobique community.

Rest easy, Firefighter Martin. Your service and dedication will not be forgotten.

This past weekend we had the opportunity to present at FDIC Atlantic in Wolfville, NS.

Over the course of the weekend, we delivered our Street Smart Aerial Operations program on both Saturday and Sunday morning, along with a classroom session focused on creating training for the real world.

We’re grateful to the FDIC Atlantic directors for their trust and confidence in us to be part of this year’s conference. It was an honour to share our experiences with so many dedicated firefighters, officers, and instructors who are committed to improving their craft and serving their communities.

Thank you to everyone who attended our sessions, asked questions, and contributed to the discussions. We always enjoy the opportunity to learn from others and exchange ideas that help make the fire service stronger.

This past weekend, our staff delivered two days of hands-on Engine Company Operations training in two different provinces to more than 100 students. Crews deployed thousands of feet of attack line using Snap-tite hose and flowed thousands of gallons of water through Elkhart Brass XD line of nozzles.

To say the weekend was a success would be an understatement. We cannot thank our supporters enough for helping us achieve our goal of delivering the Down East Engine Company Operations program.

We look forward to seeing everyone again in the future as we continue to spread the message of aggressive, effective offensive firefighting.
