What a great way to start the day! ☕️

This morning, Catalyst HR Consulting had the pleasure of co-hosting the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce’s What’s Brewing networking event at the PetleyHare Insurance Brokers beautiful Oshawa office!

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, meet new people, and bring members of our local business community together for a morning of great conversations, new connections, and of course, some coffee and treats!

One of the things I love most about being part of the Durham Region business community is the genuine support, collaboration, and encouragement that exists between local businesses. Events like this are such a great reminder of the value of building relationships and supporting one another.

A big thank you to the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to host, to the PetleyHare team for helping bring the morning together, and to everyone who joined us!

Employees rarely remember every word from a difficult conversation - but they always remember how they were treated and how they felt during it.

Whether it’s performance feedback, a workplace investigation, a policy concern, or a termination meeting, people tend to remember:
• Whether they felt respected
• Whether the message was clear and honest
• Whether they felt rushed, dismissed, or embarrassed
• Whether empathy and accountability coexisted

Having difficult conversations is part of the job in leadership.

Avoiding them usually creates bigger problems later - but handling them poorly can damage trust, culture, morale, and sometimes even increase legal risk.

The goal isn’t to make difficult conversations easy.
It’s to make them professional, respectful, and human.

People can handle hard news far better than inconsistency, avoidance, or lack of dignity.

Summer vacation season is approaching - and for many employers, it’s also when hidden HR risks start surfacing.

A few reminders for employers heading into the busy vacation season:

• Review vacation entitlement balances early
Large unused balances can create significant financial liability if they ever need to be paid out.

• Ensure vacation time is actually being scheduled and taken
Under the Employment Standards Act, employees must take their minimum required vacation time within certain timelines - it’s not something that should sit untouched.

• Have proactive conversations
Vacation management shouldn’t just be an approval process. Clear conversations around balances, future plans, unpaid time requests, and operational impacts can help avoid frustration later.

• Watch for burnout signals
Employees who consistently aren’t taking time off are often the same employees at higher risk of stress, disengagement, mistakes, absenteeism, or eventually burnout.

• Watch for “overuse” as well
Employers should also monitor situations where employees are booking vacation beyond their available entitlement, or using all available time early in the year without fully considering the implications of having little or no time off remaining later on.

• Plan coverage proactively
Cross-training and early scheduling conversations can help avoid the annual summer scramble.

A healthy workplace culture encourages people to actually disconnect and recharge - while also helping employees plan their time realistically and sustainably throughout the year, and ensuring operational effectiveness.

Today I had the opportunity to spend some time volunteering at a local McDonald’s restaurant in support of McHappy Day.

It was incredible to see the level of community support behind such an important initiative, with funds raised locally helping support both the Durham Children's Aid Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

A sincere thank you to my fellow volunteers, and to the McDonald’s staff for welcoming volunteers, keeping everything running smoothly during such a busy day, and for the work you do to support our communities.

I'm proud to have been a small part of it.
