Amazing stories like this happen all the time. Anyone here ever thrown something away, and regret it today? As a kid I had every "Garfield & Friends" stuffed toys and the whole collection of hundreds of little plastic Smurfs. Knowing what they would have been worth today is shocking. What do you regret having thrown away that would now have been worth far more today?

So was it in the case of an elderly woman from the UK, who was in for a shock after she found that a diamond she was about to throw away thinking it was fake was worth millions.

I'm asked all the time why I use the "realized value" method of valuations. Frankly, I believe it's the most professionally accurate method to determine actual value. If you've ever come across the term "realized value" and wondered what that is, in a nutshell, it is what someone is willing to pay for an item, despite its value or lack of value.

"Realizable value is the net amount of money that you will get from selling one of your assets. In other words, realizable value is equal to the sale price of an asset less any applicable fees. Note that this has nothing to do with the fair market value of the asset being sold."
