There are a few simple things I recommend homeowners check before the colder weather settles in.

Walk around the outside of your home and look for small openings around utility lines, pipes, vents, doors, and the foundation.

Check the garage door seal as well. If there's a visible gap underneath or around the sides, mice may be able to use it to get inside.

Inside, keep pet food, bird seed, and dry goods in sealed containers and avoid leaving cardboard boxes piled against basement or garage walls.

October is a good time to make these checks because mice are actively looking for warmer places to shelter.

October is when I start getting more calls about rodents moving indoors around the Greater Ottawa area.

As the nights get colder, mice start looking for warmer and more protected places to stay. Basements, garages, attics, and wall spaces can give them exactly that.

Most homeowners notice something small at first. A few droppings near a basement wall, scratching sounds at night, or signs of activity around stored boxes.

Those early signs are worth paying attention to because once mice find a safe way inside, they have very little reason to leave as the weather gets colder.

When I inspect a roach problem, I don't just focus on the insects someone has seen.

I check behind appliances, underneath sinks, inside lower cabinets, around plumbing, and along baseboards to figure out where the activity is concentrated.

I also look for moisture, food buildup, cracks, and other conditions that are helping them stay there.

Once I know where they're hiding and moving, treatment can be focused on the areas that actually need it.

With roaches, dealing with the source early is much easier than waiting for the activity to spread into other parts of the home.

There are a few simple things I recommend homeowners do to help prevent roaches.

Keep kitchen counters and sinks clean and dry overnight, and don't leave dirty dishes sitting out.

Check underneath sinks for small leaks, and clean behind the stove and refrigerator occasionally. Food and grease can collect there without being noticed.

I also recommend keeping dry food and pet food sealed and taking the garbage out regularly.

Roaches are looking for food, moisture, and somewhere quiet to hide. Reducing those things can make a big difference.

I always recommend paying closer attention to roach activity around homes in the Greater Ottawa area during September.

Most problems start with something small. You might see one near the kitchen sink at night, another behind an appliance a few days later, or notice small droppings inside a lower cabinet.

When I'm dealing with spider activity, I'm not just looking at the webs people can see.
I want to know why the spiders are choosing that property.

Around the Greater Ottawa area, that usually means checking where insects are gathering, looking for entry points around windows and doors, and inspecting quiet areas where spiders like to settle.

Treating the visible spiders is only part of the job.

The bigger goal is reducing the conditions that keep bringing them back.

Before calling anyone about spiders, there are a few things I always recommend checking first.

Take a look around windows, ceilings, and basement corners for fresh webs. If you're removing the same webs every few days, that's usually a sign there's ongoing activity.

Next, check around the outside of your home. Shrubs growing against the siding, damaged window screens, and outdoor lights that attract insects can all make the property more inviting for spiders.

It's also worth keeping storage areas clean and organized since quiet spaces give spiders plenty of places to settle.

August is usually when I start getting more calls about spiders around the Greater Ottawa area.

What a lot of people don't realize is that spiders are usually there because they're finding plenty of insects to feed on.
