🔧 Grinding Opener? You Might Not Need a New One.

Every week we get calls that start the same way: "My opener is making a horrible grinding noise, I think I need a whole new unit." Nine times out of ten, that's not true.

Opened up this Ottawa opener recently and found exactly what we expected: the plastic drive gear — the small nylon gear that translates the motor's spin into the chain or belt movement — completely stripped and packed with years of old grease and dust. The motor itself? Perfectly fine.

Here's the part most homeowners don't know: openers are built with an intentionally weaker nylon gear as a sacrificial part. It's designed to strip and fail before the (much more expensive) motor takes damage from a jam or an overloaded door. It's a small, inexpensive part. It is NOT a reason to replace the whole opener.

Signs your gear kit is the problem, not the whole unit:
✔ Grinding or clicking noise when the door tries to move
✔ Motor runs (you can hear it) but the door doesn't move at all
✔ Door moves a few inches then stalls

🚨 Off-Track Garage Door — Emergency Repair in Ottawa

Called out to this one first thing in the morning: garage door stuck partially open, one side jammed sideways, panels twisted, opener straining and beeping. Classic off-track situation.

An "off-track" door is exactly what it sounds like — one or more of the rollers has jumped out of the vertical track. Once that happens, the door binds up, panels can flex or bend, and running the opener only makes it worse. It's a fast way to turn a small fix into a full section replacement.

Common causes we see in Ottawa:
