What empowers a community? What empowers you?

For me, it's working in a community supporting people through their difficulties. By being a bridge that closes the gap between our Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing and Western methods.
This has never been more evident for me as I work with my young friend Maddexx and his family as they navigate medical and educational systems while he recovers from a brain injury that left him with post concussion syndrome.
I enjoy the challenges of straddling two worlds in both medicine as a retired nurse and medicine woman and education as a teacher certified in Ontario and an experiential land based knowledge holder.
I held a privileged space this week as I supported Maddexx and his family Jennifer and Jeff alongside the medical team of Kids Inclusive from HDH brain injury clinic.
The space was met with staff from Molly Brant Elementary School and members of Limestone District School Board.
Our goal was to ensure that Maddexx's return to healing and learning was built within a framework that strongly supported an Indigenous Lens.
I know there are opportunities here to bridge that wide gap between the Indigenous and Western world views.
I am humbled to work with this amazingly gifted young man and his family as we journey together.
Here is a series of images of us working through his healing and learning and the introduction of Groot Cedar Wagoosh as a medical support.

Today we enjoyed a beautiful day celebrating our Indigenous culture. Special thanks to Danka Brewer for sharing her drumming knowledge, Aaralyn Gomez for teaching small voyager games, Gwendalyn Gomez for sharing her stories about Penelope her tortoise rescue and creating land art cards, and I shared jigging.
Fun had by all. Thanks to the staff and youth at Commonwealth Public School summer camp, Kampus kids.

"This is a huge problem and Canada has done this without the involvement of First Nations and has completely ignored our concerns. This lacks transparency and is undemocratic. To be clear, First Nations are not against Metis people and reject all claims of lateral violence.

First Nations respect legitimate rights-holders. We have been very clear with the government that our central issue is NOT that we reject all Métis or Métis rights. The issue is that the specific communities represented by MNO did not exist historically.” – said Chief Scott McLeod with support from Chiefs in Assembly on Day 3 of the

It was a pleasure and honour to speak at this event. I am always humbled by the accomplishments of others.
Special thanks to Xavier Gomez for sharing his day with me.

What a great turn out! Our WITHinspiration event was an amazing time, spent looking through our talented photographers’ photo gallery, participating in engaging activities using the WITHinspiration photo cards with Tim Hurson and Candace Llyod from Nookoom Learning, and hearing inspiring and moving speeches from our WITHinspiration Speaker Series, Nicole Flynn and Meghan Josling. Thank you both for sharing your stories and your talent with us.

THANK YOU once again to everyone who came out to celebrate the achievements of the photographers! And to the photographers, another huge round of applause for your photos and the positive change they will have in our work and beyond!
