🗺️ Join us for an engaging afternoon of history and archaeology at the Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre!

On Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m., archaeologist Em Miller will present “When Are We? Using Historical Maps in Modern Archaeology” as part of our ongoing Speaker Series.

Discover how historical maps help archaeologists uncover the past — and how the perspectives and biases of the mapmakers shape what we see today. This fascinating talk will explore how these documents are analyzed and interpreted to better understand local and regional history.

This weekend, our Field Directors learned Wilderness First Aid—because archaeology doesn’t always happen somewhere easy to reach.

From remote shorelines to large forested sites to those just-out-of-the-way rural areas, being prepared for the unexpected is part of the job.

It’s not just first aid, it’s:

🩹 Handling injuries with limited resources
🌲 Adapting to whatever the field throws your way

We’re excited to announce the opening of our new Kawartha satellite office!

This expansion allows Matrix Heritage to better serve projects throughout the Kawartha region while continuing to deliver the high-quality archaeological and heritage services our clients rely on.

We’re also pleased to welcome Darci Tighe and Justin Tighe, who will be leading work out of this location. Their experience and local knowledge will be key as we continue to grow our presence in the region.

Looking forward to this next chapter and the opportunities it brings.

Ontario’s proposed updates to the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists aim to bring more clarity and consistency to the industry.

But there’s another side to that conversation.

From reduced flexibility in the field to increased reporting requirements and a shift toward rigid standardization, these changes raise important questions about how archaeology is actually practiced on the ground.

Archaeology isn’t linear. Sites aren’t predictable. And good work often depends on professional judgement in complex, real-world conditions.

We’ve broken down some of the key updates—and some of the concerns.

Field season is almost here and we have some seriously exciting projects on deck 👀

Planning is in full swing. Permits, logistics, crew schedules, gear checks. Next stop: new sites, new stories, and a whole lot more dirt.
