Did you know that Canada’s deal to allow imports of 49,000 Chinese EVs this year also includes a commitment to invest in Canada?
And that the government is insisting on local production and Canadian suppliers as conditions for manufacturing investment?
Speaking at the Canadian Club in Toronto yesterday, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said manufacturers must “make material commitments to localizing production and integrating Canadian suppliers.”
For Canada’s graphite sector, those words matter.
Building a Canadian EV supply chain means connecting our mineral resources with processing, battery materials and manufacturing. Graphite belongs in that conversation, and in the investment decisions that follow.
The Minister’s broader message was clear: government has an active role to play in shaping industrial supply chains and building partnerships that translate investment into lasting economic capacity.

After more than 35 years of mining, what can our Lac des Îles still mine teach us?
The future of graphite supply starts with understanding the rock, and this week we had the privilege of hosting graphite experts from Canada and Brazil who wanted a closer look at our cornerstone mine.
Geologists from Natural Resources Canada, Quebec’s Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts and the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) visited Lac des Îles, where they were hosted by our Chief Technical Officer, Dave Marsh.
The visit comes as we pursue a pit extension that could add up to eight years to the mine’s life.

How can Japan and Canada work together to build critical minerals resiliency?

We’re in Japan this week with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce for a trade mission that will address that question and more as part of a strategic dialogue to advance the Canada–Japan economic partnership and unlock new opportunities for bilateral collaboration in an evolving global landscape.

What can critical minerals deliver for Namibia?

Northern Graphite’s Namibia Country Head, Sam Januarie, joined a national dialogue hosted this week by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) on Critical Minerals: Strengthening Public Engagement.

Namibia has the resources. The question is how best to leverage them to build skills, local business opportunities and public value.

Northern is targeting an early 2028 restart of its Okanjande mine. With a previous operating history and a Phase I target of 31,000 tonnes of concentrate a year, Okanjande offers a practical opportunity to put that question to work.

Northern Graphite is taking its integrated Canadian graphite strategy to a global audience.
Our Bissett Creek graphite project in Ontario and planned Battery Anode Material facility in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, will be showcased to global investors participating in the inaugural Canada Investment Summit today and tomorrow, Sept. 14-15.

Together, the projects would establish a made-in-Canada value chain, converting natural graphite concentrate from Ontario into battery anode material in Quebec for North American battery manufacturers.

With a Bankable Feasibility Study underway, Northern looks forward to showcasing this opportunity and engaging with global investors and potential strategic partners.

We filed an appeal with the Court of Quebec on Sept. 8 contesting a decision by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts (“MRNF”) to suspend the LDI mining lease due to an outstanding payment associated with site restoration upon completion of mining activities. In August, we were selected selected by Natural Resources Canada ("NRCan") to participate in a strategic Canada-Japan battery materials evaluation program through the Lithium-ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center ("LIBTEC"), an independent, internationally recognized, third-party battery evaluation organization. Per this piece in LEXPERT, Canada’s critical minerals ambitions will require more than developing new mines. They will require coordinated action to build domestic processing capacity and capture more of the value chain here at home.
A new joint strategy from seven Western and Northern provinces and territories is an encouraging sign of that ambition. Its focus on more efficient permitting, investment and infrastructure recognizes both the economic opportunity presented by Canada’s critical mineral resources and the strategic importance of reducing dependence on foreign supply chains.
Northern Graphite stands ready to support these national objectives. With graphite assets in Canada and plans to produce battery anode material at our proposed facility in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, our strategy extends beyond mining to creating more of the graphite value chain domestically.
