“Imagine if a record label and a consultancy had a baby.”

That was the brief from Mark for Robin Labs, his new strategy studio. We were hooked from the first call.

Mark came to us with brand-new branding, fresh off the press: logo, palette, type, illustrations - the whole nest. What he needed was a home for it. Not a sales page, but a place where people who meet him on LinkedIn or get a proposal can see who Robin Labs is and what it stands for.

So we started where we always do: strategy. We mapped out the structure, wireframed every section, then designed and built a Squarespace site that puts the brand front and centre. We kept it approachable, just like Mark: no contact forms, just a direct line to him and an invite to join his newsletter, In the Nest.

You don’t need every piece of your business figured out to have a beautiful site, but you do need a strong foundation and room to grow. Robin Labs launched with exactly that and the site is built to grow right alongside the business.

That’s our favourite part of this work: taking a brand someone loves and giving it a home that does it justice.

Congrats on the launch, Mark! We can’t wait to watch Robin Labs spread its wings 🐦

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

We shared this guide last year and we're sharing it again because the work doesn't expire after one day or one post.

Reconciliation isn't solely the government's responsibility. As brands and businesses, we can educate ourselves and our teams, amplify Indigenous voices and businesses, and build this work into how we operate year-round, not just on September 30th.

Intention matters, but impact matters more.

A few places to start:

📚 Learn: National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
https://nctr.ca

🤝 Act: Find and support Indigenous-owned businesses through the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business directory

📞 Support: Former residential school students and their families can call the 24/7 crisis line at 1-866-925-4419

The cobbler’s kids FINALLY have shoes 👟 🎉

After 13 years of building brands and websites for everyone else, we finally took our turn and our new website is now LIVE!

This one has been a long time coming. Our own website has sat on the “someday” list for years. It was DIY from the start: first on Wix for longer than we care to admit, then Webflow, and now Squarespace, which fits us perfectly.

For the first time, we have a digital home that really feels like who we are today: the work we do, the team behind it, the clients we love working with, and the values that have shaped how we’ve built this business.

And we’re not done yet.

We have a shop coming, resources to add, new pages in the works, and plenty more we want to build. That’s the point.

Because it’s the same thing we tell our clients all the time: your website doesn’t have to have every single piece in place before you put it into the world. It needs to reflect where your business is now and give you somewhere to grow from.

Turns out, sometimes the marketing agency needs to take its own advice 😅

So, welcome to our new digital home. Take a look around!

And if your website has been sitting on your own “someday” list, we’ve been there. Literally.

Let’s put a date on it.

We can tell you right now that this is NOT going to be our best performing post.

We knew that going in and posted it anyway.

Are you scratching your head yet? Thinking we're off our rocker? Maybe, but we're also not wrong.

Contrary to what gets constantly shoved down our throats, going viral isn't always the goal. In fact, it rarely should be.

Testimonials will never be your best performing posts and you still need to post them. Truthfully nobody saves or shares them, and the algorithm has zero interest in them.

Here's why we post them anyway and tell our clients to do the same: not everything you share is meant to be engaged with. Some of it is meant to be absorbed. Your audience is reading this, forming an opinion, and quietly filing it away for the day they need you. They just won't tell you that in the comments.

We could tell you we're great until we're blue in the face and it wouldn't land. When someone else says it, you believe them. That's not a trick, it's just how trust has always worked. Word of mouth has been doing this job (and doing it well!) since long before any of these platforms existed.

So swipe for what three of our clients said about working with us. Their words will always carry more weight than ours, even if the analytics never show it.

August, wrapped 📆

This last month of summer had most of our team travelling, home with kids, or trying to do both at once, which is exactly the kind of month we had in mind when we built our business the way we did. Remote and flexible isn't a line on our careers page - it's how the work gets done when it has to fit around a first day of school, a cottage week, and a toddler who has decided naps are optional.

A sample of what came across our desks this month: a client website moving over to Squarespace and being rebuilt properly for search, a monthly newsletter redesigned into a template the client can update without needing us every time, a back-page ad for a local newspaper, the regular rhythm of social media management for our retainer clients (reports, content days, scheduling, the whole thing), and a session we led to open HeyOrca's Orcademy content creation bootcamp in front of 600+ social media managers.

This is a peek, not the whole picture. Some of our work belongs to our clients to announce first and we'd rather protect that than fill a feed. If you read our newsletter the Bowda Debrief, you already know how we feel about it.

Looking at September, we're finally launching our own website (we took our own advice for once and made time for it this summer!) and we have space opening mid-month for websites, branding, and social media management. If there's something you want launched or building real momentum before the holidays, this is the window, because a proper website, brand, or social plan all need a runway and the holidays comes faster than anyone expects.

Your boss wants sales, your community wants value, and well, you're in the middle with no budget.

That's the squeeze our founder broke down for 600+ social media managers at 's Content Creation Bootcamp earlier this month.

The reality is that you don't have to pick a side but you DO need a strategy that connects both.

Your newsletter template is doing more work than you think.

When we redesigned the Monthly Buzz for This Mother Means Business, the goal wasn't just to make it prettier. It was to make every future issue easier to send.

So we built it around three things:

A clear reading order. Your reader should never wonder where to look next. Personal note up top, offers in the middle, community and podcast links where skimmers will still catch them.

Sections built for a phone. Most newsletters get opened one-handed, standing in a kitchen, between seventeen other things. Short blocks, obvious buttons, breathing room.

Repeatable everything. Every section is a swap-and-go block. New month, new content, same structure. What used to be a blank page problem becomes a fill-in-the-blanks task.

Because here's the thing: good email design isn't decoration. It's fewer decisions every single send and fewer decisions means your newsletter actually goes out every month.

Your new outfit looks good on you, TMMB! Wear it well!

Kinda chic to jump on a trend that takes ten minutes to create yourself 🤌

This one is a list of small specific things you think are chic about your business and/or your industry. That's literally it. One line per slide with a relevant photo underneath.

It can even be the same photo if that's all you've got (that's what we did), but make sure you save the best one for last.

You do not need it to look polished, but you DO need it to sound like you.

Tell us what's kinda chic about your business/industry. The people want to know!

Canada Day just wrapped, our American friends are celebrating tomorrow, kids are officially out of school, and the internet is a little preoccupied with a certain wedding that may or may not be happening 👀

Which means if there was ever a weekend to close the laptop, this is it.

And we think you should! Canada only gets a few months of real summer and you deserve to actually be in it, but before you fully check out consider this your reminder that your brand is still out there while you’re gone.

People are still Googling you, still clicking your booking link, still landing on your profile and if any of that is outdated or broken, you’re quietly losing people without even knowing it.

Five things.

Twenty minutes.

Then go enjoy your weekend ✌️

Back in 2013, before anyone was talking about algorithms or content strategies or personal brands, we started Bowda as a social media management agency because we genuinely believed in what social could do.

For the first time ever, marketing wasn’t one way. You could talk back. You could find your people across the city, the country, the world. Brands could show up like actual humans and humans could hold brands accountable. It was exciting in a way that’s hard to fully explain now.

Thirteen years later, our feelings are more complicated…not about the work because we do still love the work, but somewhere along the way the noise got louder, the tactics got copied faster, and “authentic” became a strategy instead of a default. Everyone with a following started offering social media services. The algorithm became the whole conversation.

And honestly? Some days it’s a lot.

But here’s what we keep coming back to: the premise never changed. Connection. Reciprocity. Showing up like a real person for real people. That was true in 2013 and it’s still the only thing that actually works now.

We made this carousel today because it’s Social Media Day and we wanted to say something honest instead of something polished.
