One of the practical tools shared by our facilitator in our recent critical thinking webinar was the 5 Whys.

A problem happens. You ask why. Then you keep asking until the conversation moves past the first visible symptom.

It’s a simple way to slow the conversation down and get to the root of the problem.

We’re pleased to have Barbara Odenwald leading our May webinar, Critically Thinking Your Way Through a Problem.

Barbara is a PMC facilitator, corporate consultant, and coach who helps people and teams gain clarity, strengthen communication, and work through complex situations.

Barbara also speaks five languages, including English and French. It’s a small detail, but one that further supports the range of communication experience she brings to her work.

During the webinar, Barbara will explore how empathy, active listening, and assertive communication can support stronger critical thinking.

Join us this upcoming Friday, May 29, from 12:15–1:00 p.m. ET.

“I will totally take care of that.”

Sometimes it means the thing is handled.

And sometimes it means the thing has entered a mysterious holding pattern where everyone agrees it exists, but no one is quite sure when it will actually happen.

Parents may recognize this pattern outside the workplace, too. 😉

A message can feel clear on your side of the screen.

Then the reply comes back:

“I’m not sure what you need from me.”
“Is this urgent?”
“Can you send more context?”

Or nothing comes back at all.

Before you send the email, Teams message, update, or “quick question,” try asking:

What does this person need first so they can understand, respond, or act?

For one person, that may be the decision.
For another, the context.
For another, a bit of reassurance.
For another, the details and next steps.

The goal is to make your message easier to understand, so the other person can focus on moving the work forward.

This month, we’re pleased to spotlight Ecology Ottawa as our May Impact Partner.

Ecology Ottawa works with residents across Ottawa on local environmental issues, including climate, transportation, and greenspace.

They help turn environmental concern into local action by giving residents information, tools, and opportunities to get involved.

Ecology Ottawa will also be joining us for a brief five-minute spotlight during our webinar on May 29.

Setting a boundary does not always start with “no.”

Sometimes it starts with a clarifying question.

When you receive a new request and you’re already at capacity, a useful move is to pause and clarify what can be adjusted:
- Priority
- Timing
- Scope
- Trade-off

It also gives your leader better information. If something new needs to be added, something else may need to shift.

These are practical conversations about expectations before the pressure turns into resentment, rushed work, or missed priorities.

We explore this more in our latest article on setting boundaries at work when saying no feels risky.

Do you consider yourself a critical thinker?

- Can you analyze information?
- Spot gaps?
- Weigh options before making a decision?

Critical thinking relies on logic, but it doesn’t stop there. It can also draw on empathy, active listening, and assertive communication.

In this month’s webinar, Critically Thinking Your Way Through a Problem, Barbara Odenwald will explore some of the overlooked skills that support stronger critical thinking at work.

She’ll also share practical tools to help participants explore challenges more fully before moving into solutions.

We’ll be joined by our May Impact Partner, Ecology Ottawa, who will share a brief spotlight on their work engaging residents on local environmental issues, including climate, transportation, and greenspace.

Join us!
Friday, May 29, from 12:15–1:00 p.m. ET.

Mouna Awale always loved sport, but she never had gear that made her feel like herself. So she made it.

Asturaad Clothing is a modest activewear brand designed for comfort, confidence, and full inclusion. High-performance pieces that let people of all backgrounds, body types, and beliefs move freely and show up authentically.

Mouna founded Asturaad in 2022 to fill a gap she'd lived personally and to elevate representation in a market that had overlooked her community. What started as a personal mission has grown into a brand with a bigger vision: a future where everyone has a place to shop.

Through the Entrepreneur Growth Scholarship, she's building the business and brand skills to amplify that mission and bring it to even more people across Canada.

You probably didn’t read this image in perfect order.

You likely started with the biggest text.
Then moved to the bold line underneath.
Then decided whether the smaller text was worth your time.

And what about the text on the side?
Or the line sitting at the very top?

Now think about the last email, report, or deck you sent.
Busy readers will not necessarily read it in order or in detail.

They’re looking for clues:
• What is this about?
• Why does it matter?
• Do I need to do anything?

If the key message is buried, it can easily be missed.

We explore this more in our new article, How to Write for Busy Readers. https://pmctraining.com/articles-and-resources/how-to-write-for-busy-readers/
