Micro-Lesson #5: The Power of the Pause

Over-explaining is an instinct. When we feel a relationship is at risk, we want to smooth things over and justify our choices.

But in the workplace, over-explaining can actually erode your leadership presence. It sounds like doubt, even when you are 100% capable. The move? Choose clarity over justification.

Leaders don’t rush to defend themselves. They stay grounded and clear.

Stop: Explaining every decision to prove you’re "reasonable."
Start: Taking a pause, then responding with simple, focused clarity.

Next time you feel the urge to justify, try: “Let me think about that and get back to you,” or “Here is the decision I’m making and why it serves the bigger goal.” ✨

Micro-Lesson #4: The “Double-Bind” Challenge

Leadership is still unconsciously coded as masculine in many workplaces. As a result women often find themselves navigating the "double bind."

Too warm? You’re "nice," but not taken seriously. Too direct? You’re "intense" or "difficult."

The way through isn't to pick a side. It’s to pair warmth with visible competence—on purpose. Most of us are already pros at connection and collaboration. To balance the equation, we need to weave in signals of expertise.

This isn’t bragging; it’s providing context.

Stop: Over-performing friendliness to "soften the edges."
Start: Deliberately referencing your years of experience and data-backed results.

👉 Quick experiment: In your next meeting, try prefacing a point with: “In my 15 years of working with X, here’s what I’ve seen…”

November can feel tough, dark, wet, and a little…long. That’s why I double down on abundance this month 🌟

Here’s how I support my mental wellness:

1️⃣ Gratitude – Start the day listing what I’m grateful for.

2️⃣ Celebrate Achievements – Join in celebrating others’ successes.

3️⃣ Look for Goodness – Mentally note kindness, it multiplies.

4️⃣ Challenge Limiting Beliefs – Reframe “not enough” into “I have enough for what matters.”

5️⃣ Surround Yourself with Positivity – Curate your circle. Energy is contagious.

How are you coping this November? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

This is for anyone who’s ever felt powerless at work.

No big title? No official authority? That doesn’t mean you can’t influence outcomes.

Here are five ways to lead and get things done, even without a “big stick”:

1. Address Concerns
Be the person who listens for meaning, not just words. Repeat back what you heard, ask questions, and speak directly to concerns—even if you can’t fix them.

2. Gain Buy-In at Every Stage
Influence is a process, not a one-time pitch. Build momentum by checking in, reflecting what you hear, and making space for others to be heard.

3. Work with the Grumpies
Grumpy people often care the most. Invite them in. Their pushback can become your biggest support—if you have the patience and courage to engage.

4. Build Real Relationships
Trust isn’t assumed. Be clear (more clear than you think you need to be) about how you work, what you expect, and how you’ll stay accountable. And yes—ask for feedback.

5. Plan the Process
Slow down to speed up. Use tools like the RACI model to clarify who’s involved and who decides. Clear roles = smoother projects and fewer surprises.

✨ Influence starts with mindset.

Even without the title, you can lead.

Let’s be honest: most of us aren’t the final decision-makers.

We don’t always have the title, the board authority, or the loudest voice in the room.

But what do we have? Influence.

Leading through influence isn’t just a skill—it’s a mindset.

It’s about moving ideas forward when you don’t have the power to make things happen.

I explored this in a recent LinkedIn Live with strategic planning expert Lisa Chicules.

We unpacked:
- The real dynamics between CEOs and Board Chairs (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
- How to build buy-in without bulldozing
- The power of active listening to address, not just hear, concerns

📢 Key takeaway: Influence is built, not handed to you.

It grows when you:
- Present ideas with clarity, not ego
- Earn trust through consistent listening
- Invite collaboration, even when it’s messy

Now for the AI twist…

After our talk, I took the recording, uploaded it into Riverside to get the transcript, and used Perplexity.ai to help distill the content into two clear, actionable emails.

Then I did what I always do, edited it to sound more like me, added some warmth and heart, and built a framework for others to use.

Why share all this with you?

Because AI is here, and no, it’s not replacing my voice. But it is helping me get to impact faster. It’s one more tool to amplify the work we’re already doing.

💬 Now it’s your turn: What’s one way you’ve used influence, not authority, to move an idea forward?

And (bonus question) how are you experimenting with AI in your leadership or communications?

Let’s learn from each other.
