Honoured to have attended the 19th Annual International Human Rights Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, where I had the privilege of connecting with inspiring changemakers from around the world.

The 2025 Summit, held under the theme “Education for Peace,” was graciously sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste and co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, and Bolivia, with additional support from St. Kitts and Nevis. Hosted in Conference Room 3, the event brought together youth, advocates, and leaders from around the globe—united by a shared commitment to advancing human rights and dignity for all.

Meeting like-minded individuals and engaging in powerful conversations has been invaluable. I’m especially grateful to Mary Shuttleworth and Nicole Crellin for the invitation and opportunity to represent the advocacy work my organization is doing on the ground. Roots & Culture Canada

On June 19th, is recognition of National Sickle Cell Awareness Day, Senator Marie-Françoise Mégie, in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Association of Canada and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Black Health at the University of Ottawa, hosted a powerful Parliamentary Breakfast to mark this important occasion.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement regarding Bill S-201: An Act to Prohibit and Prevent Genetic Discrimination. The bill has now successfully passed its third reading in the Senate and is moving to committee review — an essential step toward becoming Canadian law.

This legislation matters. It’s about protecting the rights and dignity of those living with genetic conditions like Sickle Cell Disease — a life-altering illness that affects over thousands of Canadians. For those living with it, every day is a fight — against chronic and acute pain, unpredictable health crises, and systemic barriers to care.

I was deeply moved by the testimony of my childhood friend Ulysse Guerrier, who shared his powerful story of resilience and what it means to live with Sickle Cell. His courage is a reminder of why we must act now.

I’m excited to share some great news—my friend and neighbor, Colette Lacroix Velthuis, is officially running for city council in Osgoode Ward!

She’s been a steady presence here, raising her family, supporting local initiatives, and always showing up for her neighbors. Her strong family values, combined with her experience and clear commitment to public service, make her exactly the kind of advocate we need representing us at City Hall.
