Leadership isn’t telling your team “I trust you” and walking away. That isn’t empowerment. That is abdication.

Real autonomy needs a structure behind it, one that lets your team make calls within the leader’s broader intent when unforeseen opportunities or obstacles arise.

If you expect your team to exercise disciplined initiative, you cannot simply grant permission, you must build the environment that makes intelligent risk-taking possible.

Last Saturday our team partnered with GIB-SAN POOLS for a Canoe Day session, certifying their team in ORCKA Level 1 canoeing and guiding them through a collective 14 kilometre Paddle for Resilience.

Here’s what that day looked like.

Early on, some team members weren’t sure they could complete the paddle, whether due to physical readiness or skill level. We gave them the lessons and route information they needed, encouraged them along the way, and made sure the right safety measures were in place to support the challenge. By the end of the day, they crossed the finish line proud and stronger than when they started.

That’s really what resilience is about: a skill that can be taught, learned, and practiced. You can learn to Struggle Well.

Thank you to the Gib-San Pools team for showing up together and supporting Wounded Warriors Canada through the Paddle for Resilience initiative. Your generous donation helps trauma-exposed organizations, trauma-exposed professionals, and their families access mental health and resilience support.

And if you’d like to support Paddle for Resilience as well, check the donation link in bio.

One year since we departed for the longest canoe expedition we’ve ever done.

In 33 days down the Ottawa River, we learned a lot, put our resilience to the test, worked as a team, and together raised CA$100K for Wounded Warriors Canada.

To celebrate, we’ve launched a brand new video from the expedition, sharing some never-before-seen scenes and learnings with all of you.

You can watch the full video on our YouTube (link in bio)

Want your team to move faster? Give them Simple Rules.

As Sull and Eisenhardt point out in Simple Rules: How to Thrive in a Complex World, corporate over-engineering only leads to friction and paralysis. The antidote isn’t more bureaucracy. It’s a handful of specific, actionable guidelines, built for one bottleneck at a time.

Swipe through to see how simple rules work, and how this plays out in the real world.

What are the simple rules your team already relies on, even if you’ve never written them down?

We paddled all the way from Kingston to Ottawa through the historic Rideau Canal.

Between more than 20 portages, 40+ locks, and hard weather conditions, we’ve gathered a lot of lessons and great moments too.

The Paddle for Resilience 2026 initiative has already raised $10,075 for Wounded Warriors Canada. You can still help until September 7, link in bio.

Your workforce has never been more skilled.
So why does productivity keep stalling?

The answer isn’t more control. It’s a shift from directive leadership to intent-based empowerment. Swipe through to see the six shifts worth trying.

From battlefield to boardroom, that’s how we Clear the Way, becoming better leaders for ourselves and for our teams.

Paddle for Resilience 2026: 195km along the Rideau Canal, from Kingston to Ottawa.

This year, we chose a historic route to paddle while raising funds for Wounded Warriors Canada .

Our biggest challenge? The weather! Strong winds, torrential rain, even thunderstorms.

What got the team through, on time: preparation, simple rules defined in advance (so hard decisions didn’t have to be made mid-adversity, when emotions run high), adaptability when plans needed to change, open communication, and accountability.

Rest, even when behind schedule. Teamwork and a high level of trust. Both non-negotiable.

At the finish line, friends and family gathered to celebrate with the paddlers, a reminder of another piece of resilience: Human connection.

So far we’ve raised CA$9,575. Thank you to everyone who has supported Paddle for Resilience.

We showed up with powerhaus for a Canoe Lesson Day at Westboro Beach, in support of Paddle For Resilience.
The Powerhaus community took part in a full-day canoeing course led by our instructors and left the beach with an ORCKA Flatwater Level 1 certificate, new skills, and a shared sense of purpose. Together, this community helped raise CAD $1,400 for Wounded Warriors Canada .

And about the flips? Well, that’s part of the “Do Hard Things” principle of resilience, right?!

There’s still time to support Paddle For Resilience and contribute to mental health support for veterans across Canada. Check the link in bio to learn how.
